Today, we are used to most new electronics television channels broadcasting gospel preachers on Sunday mornings, music every afternoon on week days, and soap operas from Latin America or Asia every evening. A few other channels show movies from West Africa, particularly from Nigeria. The content is so similar that it is nearly impossible to tell which station you are watching. In some areas in the country, the direction of the antennae dictates which channels you watch, unless you have a huge antenna that covers the different directions that the signals come from, a satellite dish, or cable television. The latter two would give you more entertainment options, but they aren’t cheap. The alternative would be to buy DVDs from the numerous stalls that sell them towns. The prices are generally pocket-friendly. At Sh150, you could buy yourself enough movies to keep you going for a week. A second choice is to go online and watch shows off video hosting sites. This requires that you have a good Internet connection. The variety of content is so high that it is unlikely you would watch one per cent of the content online in your lifetime. Finally, and this is new, you can get digital television, a new subscriber based TV system that is supposed to deliver diverse content from across the world.

Digital television is superior to analogue television in that it delivers richer content (image-wise) and offers a wider range of choice. In digital television, the audio and video signals are multiplexed (joined) and then transmitted to a receiver, known as the set-top box, which decodes the signal and makes it available for the television set. In analogue television, the signals are sent and received separately, and then merged in the TV set. The set-top box is actually a decoder. In this system, the images are sharper. Exciting stuff ahead, right? Not really. The buzz of digital television died as soon as the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Mr Bitange Ndemo, and the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK), started talking about it. Did the team involved with managing this transition consider if people were interested in it in the first place, no matter the world of good it was meant to bring? Kenyans already burnt their fingers with pay television twice, and have since remained shy and sceptical of such systems. Memories of GTV and Smart TV still linger on. Being asked to buy a third set-top tv box android 4.0 in a decade is a tall order.

Tablet pipo s1 sales have been a strong product category for D&H Distributing in 2012, but desktops and servers have also seen revenue growth of more than 20 percent for the Harrisburg, Pa.-based distributor. Dan Schwab, co-president of D&H, said the company's overall sales increased more than 10 percent this year, the 12th consecutive year of double-digit growth. D&H's fiscal year ends in April, and the company expects close to $3 billion in sales, he said. The release of Windows 8 in October had a nice impact on tablet sales, but Android and other Windows OSes catapulted the category for most of the year, Schwab said. "We're selling a lot of Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) products, even before Windows 8 and touchscreen enhancements. There's a tremendous interest in Microsoft on tablets. It really solves the whole BYOD issue and makes it easier within small enterprises. We obviously expect to see a bigger shift to Windows 8 in 2013," Schwab said. Meanwhile, while the sweeping popularity of tablets has had an impact on traditional notebook sales, which saw flat or negative growth in several months, they've had no impact on desktops, which saw a surge in sales in 2012 through D&H.

"I see it as a renaissance almost, with all-in-one systems and lower-power consumption and the whole refresh cycle," Schwab said. "Most businesses are migrating into mobile solutions, whether it be notebooks or tablets, but most enterprises are also maintaining desktops." In addition, server sales increased more than 20 percent this year through D&H, which Schwab attributed to a large refresh of back-office infrastructure because telecommunications, networking and software sales were also up by more than 20 percent. "We've done a really good job, and resellers have done a really good job upgrading whole back-office server infrastructure, from Lenovo, [Hewlett-Packard] and Intel. With that, when people upgrade the icoo icou7 server environment that comes with networking, VoIP, software licensing upgrades as well," Schwab said.

I can't help but feel that the letter published Dec. 4 about electronic cigarette ego-t and the writer's belief that they should be banned indoors is a bit unfair, uninformed and downright incorrect. I feel it my duty, as an avid user of electronic cigarettes, to not let the community fall into the trend of allowing misunderstanding to become fear. There have been multiple studies done on the subject of electronic cigarette vapor safety and the safety of its second-hand vapor. All of the studies done so far have supported the idea that not only are electronic cigarettes safer than conventional tobacco products but, in fact, may pose no health risk at all to the user as well as others in the room. Electronic cigarettes do not utilize combustion to produce vapor. They heat a liquid comprised of vegetable glycerin (I guarantee you are within 50 feet of a product containing vegetable glycerin as you read this), propylene glycol (used in the medical field for non-water soluble medications and in respiratory treatments for decades upon decades) and flavoring that have been used in foods as well as electronic cigarettes.

If you read through these articles and the studies they are talking about (links are in the articles), you'll find that not only are the amounts of nicotine and other chemicals not harmful to bystanders, but that they were, in fact, immeasurable by the instruments used to conduct the studies. I also feel that it is simply incorrect, let alone unfairly biased toward unfair views of electronic cigarettes, to refer to the second-hand vapor as "smoke." It is not smoke. There is no burning. There is no fire. What you put into an electronic cigarette is exactly what you get out. Nicotine in and of itself is not harmful. It is actually a fairly mild cousin of caffeine. The only real negative affect of nicotine is its addiction potential. which, in tobacco products such as cigarettes, is increased due to MAOIs produced through the combustion of some of the thousands of chemicals in tobacco smoke. new electronics Electronic cigarettes are, as far as the studies show us so far, about as dangerous as drinking a cup of coffee in a humid room. I hope you take the time to read this and really look into the studies and articles I've provided you.

By carrying out a new, independent study, researchers hope to introduce a degree of objectivity into the emotional topic of weather electronic cigarette ego-t harmful to users. Electronic cigarettes are experiencing somewhat of a boom at the moment. An estimated two million people in Germany have already turned to the vapour cigarette, which many view as a healthy alternative to conventional smoking. However, a number of voices, primarily from the political sphere, are warning of possible health risks, claiming that the long-term consequences cannot yet be foreseen. Studies to date have come to mixed conclusions. There is a general lack of substantiated facts, fuelling an ongoing battle between supporters and opponents. The goal of the researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI in Braunschweig was to find out whether e-cigarettes pollute the surrounding air, thus affecting bystanders of an e-cigarette user. An e-cigarette consists of a battery, an atomizer, a heating coil and a reservoir for the liquids used for producing vapour. These liquids are heated up in the atomizer and vaporized at between 65 and 120 degrees Celsius. The user activates the mechanism either by pressing a button or by suction, depending on the design. Liquids come with or without nicotine, and also contain aromas and flavours like amaretto, almond, vanilla or apple.

Propylene glycol is the most usual solvent; it produces the atomized mist that resembles smoke when exhaling. In contrast to conventional cigarettes, which constantly emit smoke as the tobacco burns, the electronic equivalent only releases volatile substances when it is turned on.

But that is not the only difference between the two stimulants, as the WKI researchers observed.

"In the e-cigarette, vaporized substances create an aerosol of ultrafine particles which become even finer when inhaled into the lungs. These tiny nanodroplets disperse over time. In contrast, the combustion process discharges solid particles that can remain in the surrounding air for a considerable time," Dr. Tobias Schripp, co-author of the study, said. The Fraunhofer experts conducted a series of test chamber measurements to analyze emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ultrafine particles and formaldehyde, with particular emphasis on the quantity, concentration and distribution of particles. Tests were conducted using volunteers in an 8-cubic-meter test chamber, where conventional cigarettes were compared with china online store e-cigarettes containing a variety of liquids. To ascertain how the distribution of particles develops over a number of minutes, and the amount of propylene glycol released in the longer term, the vapor was in addition pumped directly into a 10-liter glass chamber. This test was performed on different types of e-cigarette, all containing the same liquid.

The price guns are at the ready with retailers across the country set to cut the prices of pipo s1 tablets of all sorts, from the full size 10" power houses, right down to the new 7" super portable tablets. But the shop that's really going the whole way is Carphone Warehouse, now running a UK's lowest priced tablet campaign. How much can you save? First up is the all-conquering iPad 3. Originally priced north of £550, Carphone Warehouse currently sells it at £438. Not bad, considering iPad 3 has the same screen as iPad with Retina display (iPad 4), a powerful dual core processor and one of the best graphics chips going. One of the best deals around right now is for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Priced at £199, it was good value. Powerful hardware, super portable size and great software - Android Ice 4.0 Cream Sandwich, which is jam-packed with features and gives access to hundreds of thousands of apps. Now, Carphone Warehouse is offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Wi-Fi 8GB at £147, with a stunning £30 of cash back. Effectively, this means the Tab 2 is £117.

The Nexus 7 is proving to be one of the most popular tablets going, and Google is already selling it cheap. Despite sporting an HD screen, top of the range quad core processor and the latest version of the Android operating system, Google still managed to retail it for £199. Carphone Warehouse has again gone one better, knocking the price down to £195. While not in the same discount range as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, a saving is a saving. Next on Carphone Warehouse's list is the Amazon Kindle Fire. Famous thanks to the Amazon Kindle eReader and the success of the original Amazon Kindle Fire in America, prices began sub-£150. Black Friday resulted in Amazon dropping the price, but if you want the Kindle Fire straight away, Carphone Warehouse stores are offering the tablet for a market leading £98. Considering the quality screen, light weight, small size and powerful dual core processor, it's a real steal. Back to full size tablets and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Larger than its little brother, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, the 10.1" screen is bright and has a nice high contrast, great for media content. The best Android contender to iPad with Retina display, the Note 10.1 is packed with unique features, thanks in part to its market leading quad core processor. The S Pen stylus means you can draw, hand write notes and use gestures for handy shortcuts. There are also powerful split screen multitasking and floating windows for watching videos on top of web surfing or email writing. For content creation, no gpad f35 tablet comes close to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, and starting at £317, considering the entire tech packed inside, it's a bargain.

Wouldn't it be great to answer your front door with a starwell sc6820 smartphone? That's the promise of Doorbot, a Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell that alerts you whenever someone pushes its button, sending audio and video to your smartphone. The battery-operated device installs at your threshold with four screws in a bracket. Once you've downloaded its free app and synced any iOS device or Android smartphone with it, you can see and converse with visitors at your door. The app will alert you whenever the button is pushed. There's a microphone on board the DoorBot that lets you talk with whomever's visiting you, even if you're thousands of miles away. The camera works at night, too, using infrared technology to allow a clear view of visitors even in the dark. When someone presses the button on the DoorBot, you'll receive an alert on your smartphone. If you always have your phone nearby (and who doesn't these days?), you'll be able to instantly respond to visitors, or reject them without them knowing if you're home or not. DoorBot is offered by a company called Edison Junior, and it's offering its device as a stand-alone product. Things get even more interesting when the company combines DoorBot with Lockitron, a wireless mechanism made by Apigy that lets you unlock your door from anywhere using a smartphone app. When Lockitron is combined with DoorBot, you'll be able to not only answer your door, but unlock it for those you authorize to enter your house.

What about security? Won't this shiny aluminum-clad gadget tempt opportunistic thieves? Edison Junior's CEO and Chief Inventor Jamie Siminoff doesn't think that's a deal-breaker. "DoorBot can be installed with four screws, but DoorBot comes with an included mounting bracket. Many homes have other items of value outdoors, such as lights, and should not be a cause for concern," he told Mashable. The company says the technology used to power the video camera, microphone and Wi-Fi connectivity is highly efficient, with a year's worth of battery life for its four AA batteries. Of course, that battery life depends on how many people visit you each day. Siminoff told us the batteries will last a year with an average of four rings each day. "If the w007 android review smartphone user gets a lot of rings, about 5-10 per day, the DoorBot's batteries may last about 9-12 months," he says. But DoorBot is helpful in that instance, too. He added, "DoorBot will alert the user when the batteries are getting low so that you know to change them."

Sitting inside the lobby of the post office on Dalton Avenue, supervisor Betty Smith has a pile of letters written from Tri-State children in need as part of the Operation Santa program. "A lot of them are asking for socks, intimate gadgets underclothes, coats, gloves and I know a lot of times we have to call and ask, 'what kind of toy do they need?'" Smith said. "Those we know are in need because they are not concerned about the toys." The United States Postal Service started Operation Santa 100 years ago as a way to connect children with anonymous donors so they can have a toy to open on Christmas. This year the Dalton Avenue location has more than 200 families requesting assistance. Smith will stay in the post office lobby for the next two weeks hoping all the families will get donors in time for Christmas. "This is what I do every Christmas morning," Smith said holding back tears. "I cry because we've got special children that are getting gifts and that's pretty much what's important to me. Each child being blessed each year." This year also marks Smith's last year since she will retire from the postal service after 34 years.

Staying true to its theme of flamboyance, perfectly toned bodies and, of course, futuristic lingerie, the Victoria's Secret fashion show held in New York last week got a lot of attention. The one day spectacle of lithe models or angels strutting in expensive underclothes saw model Alessandra Ambrosio walking the ramp in a 2.5 million dollar Floral Fantasy bra, as a part of a yearly tradition by Victoria's Secret to introduce a Fantasy Bra. This year the million dollar push-up bra featured amethysts, sapphires and rubies, with a floral 20-carat diamond centrepiece. Ambrosio wore it with a delicate belt, strung across the midriff, which sparkled with a further 5,200 precious stones. The lucky wearer of the fantasy lingerie last year that was also priced at 2.5 million dollars, model Miranda Kerr, also sashayed down the ramp looking hot in a white silk one piece sex bikini with a black lace overlay, fluffy white wings and black opera gloves. Singers Rihanna and Justin Beiber also attended the show.

Screen cracks and dents are the bane of any mtk6515 smart phone owner, but tech giant Samsung may have developed one that is unbreakable. The tech giant, the world’s leading technology company by revenue, is gearing up the launch the next generation of its flagship Galaxy smartphone. Codenamed "Project J", the Galaxy S IV could be on the market in April. And, as smartphones increasingly look alike, an unbreakable screen could be a big selling point for the Galaxy, which is battling Apple iPhone to lead the $200bn-plus (154bn-plus) smartphone market. The Galaxy S IV is also expected to have bigger and better display, a quad-core processor and a 13 megapixel camera, with picture density of 441 pixels per inch (ppi), compared with the Galaxy S III’s 306 ppi and the iPhone 5’s 326 ppi. Samsung, a major backer of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, is a frontrunner in developing unbreakable screens, as OLED panels can replace glass substrate with plastic. "Eventually, they’ll have unbreakable and flexible displays. Either the Galaxy S IV or S V will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and foldable displays by 2014. That’s going to be a gamechanger," said Mark Newman, Stanford Bernstein analyst in Hong Kong. The South Korean consumer electronics giant faced off against Apple again yesterday in a US courtroom for a follow-up ruling on whether it copied some of its American rival’s patents and should pay the $1bn awarded to Apple by jurors in an August verdict. Samsung wants the verdict overturned, while Apple wants the damages to be increased and Samsung phones banned in the US. Since that landmark verdict, however, Samsung shares have gained 14% to record highs, while Apple shares have slipped by nearly 20%, wiping more than $120bn off its market value.

Drivers talking or texting on their smartphones have given mobile devices a bad reputation as road distractions. But a new smartphone app could actually warn drivers if they appear distracted or drowsy behind the wheel. The app uses smartphone technology to mimic fancier car safety systems by detecting signs of trouble that could lead to accidents. Modern phones with cameras facing both front and back allow the app to monitor a driver's head pose, eyes and blinking rate to detect possible distraction or drowsiness, even as it keeps watch on the road ahead. "We can determine the distance between cars in front and whether a driver is changing lanes on the outside, while detecting drowsiness and distraction inside," said Andrew Campbell, a computer scientist at Dartmouth College. The cheap cell phones smartphone sits mounted on a dashboard holder as a hands-free helper for drivers. Whenever the car safety app detects any dangerous patterns in driver behavior or outside conditions, it warns the driver with a blinking light and a noise alert. Such an app could provide a cheap, effective safety solution that works with any car model. But the app developers — a team from Dartmouth College, Autonomous National University of Mexico, Microsoft Research Asia and the University of Bologna in Italy — faced huge challenges while making their idea into a reality.

Despite the increased adoption rate of cheap cell phones, the overall worldwide mobile phone market is expected to see minimal growth this year. The International Data Corporation predicts that the market will see a year-over-year increase of only 1.4% in 2012, the lowest annual growth rate in three years. Going forward, however, the market is expected to see increased growth. Mobile phone vendors are estimated to ship more than 1.7 billion handsets this year and more than 2.2 billion devices by 2016. Consumers are continuing to buy smartphones faster than ever. Vendors are expected to ship 224.5 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2012, representing a 39.5% year-over-year increase. On the year, smartphone shipments are predicted to grow 45.1% from 2011 to 717.5 million units.“Sluggish economic conditions worldwide have cast a pall over the mobile phone market this year,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “However, the fourth quarter will be relatively bright due in part to sales of high-profile smartphones, such as the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3, in addition to lower-cost Android-powered smartphones shipped to China and other high-growth emerging markets.”

The research firm forecasts Android will “be the clear leader in the smartphone mobile operating system race” due to the large selection of devices from a wide range of manufacturers. Samsung (005930) is once again expected to be the top Android vendor, although both LG (066570) and Sony (SNE) are seeing increased sales and “are not to be overlooked.” Google’s (GOOG) operating system is expected to control 68.3% of the market this year and continue its dominance through 2016 with a slightly lower 63.8% share. Apple’s (AAPL) iOS platform is expected to remain in the number two spot behind Android in 2012 with a 18.8% market share. The operating system is predicted to see minimal growth through 2016 due to “the popularity of the iPhone across multiple markets” and is expected to control 19.1% of the market. IDC notes that until Apple examines the possibility of offering less expensive models, iOS is expected to ship lower volumes than Android. Windows Phone is estimated to capture a 2.6% share of the market in 2012, compared to BlackBerry’s 4.7% share. The two platforms are expected continue to fight for the number three spot, although ultimately the research firm predicts Windows Phone will succeed. Microsoft’s (MSFT) operating system is expected to have an explosive future with the help of its partners — Nokia, HTC, Samsung, ZTE and Huawei w007 android review — and is estimated to increase its market share to 11.4% by 2016, while BlackBerry is seen falling to 4.1%.

Take a look at the gift lists out there this holiday season and you’ll see one type of product tops most of them: (liunx) v806 tablets. Ah, tablets. Such a simple word, but, oh, what a confusing area right now. You’ve got more than one iPad, lots of Android tablets that cost $199, then e-readers, and now Windows 8 devices. So what is the best choice? We explain our top picks below in our first of many ABC News gift guide articles. Apple pioneered the modern-day tablet category with the iPad. And its tablet still leads the pack. It is the most well-rounded tablet you can buy. The hardware is top-notch, but the apps especially set it apart. None of the other tablets on this list can brag about having over 275,000 real tablet optimized apps. It makes a load of difference when using the big screen to have apps that were designed especially for it. But, of course, you now have a few iPad choices. The $499 fourth-generation iPad is the best choice for those seeking a larger screen. The very high resolution 9.7-inch Retina display makes everything crystal clear and makes images and video look incredibly crisp. It is also powered by an A6x processor and quad-core graphics, making it the fastest iPad yet. The $399 iPad 2 has a larger screen, but its resolution is not as high. The Mini, which starts at $329, is, well, mini. The only reason to buy this version is if you are looking for the iPad to be smaller. It fits nicely in a purse and is easier to hold when reading in bed or on an airplane. The only problem? The screen isn’t as high-resolution as the one on the regular iPad.

Apple’s got its iPads and Google’s got its Nexus tablets. The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 run the latest version of Android — Android 4.2 — and were made in partnership with Google and the hardware makers. They are the best Android tablets out there. These tablets are great for those who prefer the features of Android and are looking for something less expensive than the iPad. But the apps are not as high quality on the larger screens. Made by Samsung, the Nexus 10 is the best large-screen Android tablet around. It has a soft-touch back and a high-resolution 2560 x 1600 screen. And with an dual-core ARM processor inside, it runs everything very smoothly. But even with all those high-end specs the Nexus 10 is still relatively affordable for what it is. The Nexus 7 has been selling like hotcakes since it launched in June. Part of that has to do with its $199 price. The other part has to do with its small form factor. The 7-inch tablet weighs only 340 grams and is very light and easy to hold. There are other $199 tablets, like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Barnes & Noble Nook HD, which are good if you’ve already bought into Amazon and Barnes & Noble’s respective offerings of media content, but the Nexus 7 is the best all-around $199 tablet. It’s fast, portable, and very affordable. Here is our full review. Why would you get an e-reader if you can get a 7-inch tablet that’s great for reading books and magazines? Two reasons: you want a device with which you can read in the sun, and you want a dedicated reading device. The Kindle Paperwhite is the best e-reader if you want either of those things. It’s EInk screen is crisp and readable in direct sunlight (unlike those tablet LCD screens), it has an integrated backlight so you can see in the dark, and you can swipe to turn the pages or move through menus. The Paperwhite starts at $119, but you can pick up a Kindle from Amazon for as low as $69. You may have started to see the ads — the ones with lots of people dancing with tablets as they click the pipo s1 tablet into a thin keyboard. The Microsoft Surface won’t make you a better dancer, but it might make you more productive on a tablet. And that’s the reason to buy this one.

One of questions we get asked more than we really should here at PC Advisor is 'What is an Apple tv box android 4.0? Here, we explain what Apple TV actually is. It's fair to say that Apple TV is a little bit confusing to the uninitiated. The first thing to understand is that it's not, as its name would suggest, a TV made by Apple. It is actually Apple's own media streamer, and it's pretty much as simple as that. What's a media streamer, you ask? It's a device that plugs into your TV or HD TV and allows you to watch films, movie trailers, TV shows, home videos, photos and other media from either computers or devices on your home network, or the internet. Unlike the first-generation Apple TV, the second- and third-generation (which both cost £99) have no internal hard disk, so they can only play content over your network. The main difference from an Apple TV box to all other digital streamers/receivers, is that Apple TV is set up to work seamlessly with Apple products such as Macs and iOS devices like the iPhone or iPad. In 2008 Steve Jobs managed to explain what Apple TV is as succinctly as anyone has managed to date. He said "Apple TV was designed to be an accessory for iTunes and your computer. It was not what people wanted. We learned what people wanted was movies, movies, movies." Of course, the box does more than just "movies, movies, movies”. While the Apple TV box can be used to play movies and video on your TV wirelessly over Wi-Fi, it can also play audio files (think your MP3 collection) and display photo slideshows on your television.

However, Apple TV is a little more complicated when you look into how it interacts with other Apple devices such as iPads, iPhones and iPod touches. Similarly Apple TV's limitations are equally confusing, as it will only work with certain video/audio formats. In short, the fact that the Apple TV box is geared up to work with other Apple devices is a bit of a double-edged sword. It's good as Apple has made each of its AirPlay compatible devices ridiculously easy to use with Apple TV. AirPlay means you can stream media from your handheld device to the Apple TV box with a couple of easy clicks. For example, you could be part way through watching a movie on your iPhone 5 and then stream the rest of it onto your TV, via the Apple TV box, with a couple of taps of your iPhone's screen. Also, AirPlay can be used to display a game from your iPad, for example, on your TV, while using the iPad's screen for extra information, such as the track layout in a racing game. The Apple TV box can also play movies/audio from iTunes on your computer. Simply turn on your Home Sharing in iTunes and providing Apple new electronics TV is connected to the same wireless network as your computer with iTunes is, then you can stream content in seconds.

I use my laptop every day. I know that isn’t surprising, but I do. With that being said, it’s one of the reasons why I’m super picky about the device that I use. I’ve gone from Windows 7, to Mac OS X, to Windows 8, and then back and forth between the last two multiple times, all because my need changes on a whim. I need a certain sort of functionality, which is why (or at least one reason why) what I want will change without warning. I bring this up because I think this is one of the biggest reasons why I can’t pick a yeahpad pillbox 7 tablet, despite the fact that, right now, we’re probably in the best time to choose one. No, not because we’re in the start of the holiday shopping season. Now is probably the best time to buy a tablet because we have the best options to choose from at this point. I mean, just a few years ago there weren’t any good options, outside that one tablet from that one company. Now, though, that’s completely changed. Not only do we have two different sizes of iPads to choose from, but we also have tablets from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, ASUS, and others that are actually worth our money. Like I said, now is the perfect time to want to buy a tablet, as there are finally worthy devices to choose from. Since the launch of the Nexus 7, I’ve owned several different tablets, including the Nexus 7. I’ve picked up the iPad 3, the iPad 4, the iPad mini, Microsoft’s Surface with Windows RT, and I almost pulled the trigger on buying a Nexus 10, too. (A colleague of mine almost got me to buy HP’s TouchPad, but I talked myself out of that just in time.) All of them were returned relatively quickly, and all for the same reason: the realization that I have no idea what to use it for.

Let me explain. I use the tablet, any one of them, for a good few days, and I get a lot of use out of them. Reading the news, or checking up on social networks, or even getting some writing done. All of the tablets, with the exception of the Nexus 7, really, have been great with providing me with another means to get my writing done away from my laptop. The problem is the next part, when I have to do something with that writing, because as it stands a tablet cannot replace my laptop as the be-all device for getting work done. Which means that I’ve basically bought a very expensive device to play games on, or read the news on. Paying upwards of $400 or more to read the news in a digital fashion, or to play Jetpack Joyride on, doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s something that just . . . Well, it just hasn’t clicked for me, and I want to change that. Why? Because I think tablets, especially the ones we can choose from in today’s market, are amazing. I love them. I love the idea, the concept, and even, in most cases, the execution. The fourth-generation iPad, Surface, and the iPad mini are amazing devices to use. The Nexus 7? Probably will be my favorite 7-inch tablet for a long time. I do think that jxd s6600 review tablets need a 3G/4G connection right out of the box. Tethering to my smartphone is an option, or finding a Wi-Fi signal, but I just want the ability to connect to the ‘net wherever I am, not having to use my phone’s battery or have to find a Wi-Fi location. Those options exist, thankfully, but they don’t get a fair shake because I can’t replace my laptop quite yet.

For some people, smartphones and their always-on Internet connections and apps is a waste of money. If you don't need apps or games and you can live without fast, robust access to the Net from your haipai i9377 cell phone, then a smartphone might be expensive overkill. All four of the major U.S. wireless carriers still offer basic feature phones, which don't require expensive data plans. In this Ask Maggie, I offer some advice to a reader who is looking for one of these phones. I also offer some advice regarding the new all-in-one desktop computers. While there are definitely more people switching from basic cell phones to smartphones these days, I know there are lots of people out there in your same shoes. Smartphones offer tons of functionality that many people now feel like they can't live without, but the reality is that all that functionality and that ubiquitous access to the Internet is pricey. In some ways, I think it's kind of surprising that there aren't more people asking me for this same advice. The good news is that all the major carriers, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA, each continue to offer basic cell phones and what they call quick messaging devices that do not require data plans. The carriers recognize that there is a subset of customers who have no interest in a smartphone because it's either too complicated or too expensive. But the reality is that each of these carriers see their future in data. And they will do everything in their power to encourage as many customers as possible to sign up for smartphones that require data plans.

Overtime, I expect to see fewer of the more basic devices. But for now, carriers still offer a handful of basic phones that are either free or cost very little when you sign up for a two-year contract. The great thing about these basic phones is that they are inexpensive. The carriers either give them away for free with a two-year contract, or you pay a minimal amount for the devices. But it's not just the upfront cost that's appealing, as you mentioned in your question, but it costs much less to own a basic phone than it does a smartphone, if you keep your services to a minimum. For example, on AT&T, you could pay as little as $40 a month for your phone service. Compare this to the $80 a month you'd pay for the lowest amount of data you could get on AT&T's new Share Everything plan. Under that plan, the data service costs $40 a month for 1GB of data and it comes with unlimited text messaging and voice service. Using a basic phone with no data or text messaging, could save you half. But as you start to add additional services, like text messaging and data, the cost difference is not as big. Adding unlimited texting to AT&T's basic feature phone plan is an additional $20 a month. And if you also wanted to add data, it would cost an additional $10 a month. (Data for feature phones is $15 a month if you subscribe to that without unlimited text messaging.) In total, if you wanted 450 minutes of voice service, unlimited text messaging and unlimited data for a feature phone, you'd pay $70 a month. That's only $10 less a month than you'd pay for haipai i9220 smartphone, and you'd be getting much less in terms of the service and functionality of the device.

According to predictions from the Consumer Electronics Association, tablets will be "a very big deal" this holiday season -- selling far more units than any other type of consumer electronics gear, including TVs. It's not all that surprising, then, that we see lots and lots of knc tablet review deals in the circulars for Black Friday. It's also not that surprising, unfortunately, that really great deals on the tablets you might actually want are few and far between. That's not to say some worthwhile buys can't be found -- they can, especially for those willing to take their "deal" in the form of a gift card. We also found lots of tablet deals that you should run -- not walk -- away from. Which is which? Let's find out. Of course, the Apple iPad gets lots of play in Black Friday circulars. All of those list the iPad at its full, everyday selling price of $499 and up. But if the idea of getting and using a gift card works for you, you can actually score a deal on most versions of Apple's tablet (though not on the iPad mini). For example, Walmart is offering a $75 gift card with the purchase of an iPad 2. This is one of the store's guaranteed door busters, which means if you can get to a Walmart between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, you are promised one (or a raincheck if the store goes out of stock). Those who want the new, fourth-generation iPad should head to Target instead. That store, which opens at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, will be bundling a $60 gift card with that tablet. The deal is also available for the iPad 2, but obviously it's not as good as the Walmart offer. Those in range of a Meijer store (mostly in the Midwest) can actually score an even better deal, albeit one with even more hoops to jump through than a gift card. The chain is offering a $100 future visit coupon with the iPad (but on Thanksgiving Day only, when the store opens at 6. a.m.) or on Black Friday with the iPad 2.

The latest Amazon Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets also get little in the way of discounts, but do get the gift card treatment at a few stores. The best of those is a $30 gift card offer at Best Buy, good for either model. Possibly best tablet deal we see for Black Friday is for a kids tablet, the Nabi 2. Normally selling for $200, Walmart will roll this out 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving night for $129. Our general advice regarding kids tablets is that most are disappointments -- but the Nabi 2 breaks the mold by offering terrific performance (it's powered by the same processor as the well-regarded Google Nexus 7), a good dedicated kids app store, and more. You can expand its usefulness by loading the Amazon app store on it as well. See our earlier blog post for more information. Speaking of the Google Nexus 7, we again spotted it at lots of stores, but few are selling it at anything below full price. The lone exception is Office Depot, which is offering the 32 GB version of the Nexus 7 at $229.99, a $20 price cut. The 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is a good but not great tablet that does have a few extras, such as free cloud storage. It's on sale for Black Friday practically everywhere at around $180 give or take a buck, which is a modest savings over its everyday price of around $200. If the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 on your list, Best Buy is featuring it as a door buster with a $20 gift card. The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 is a fast performer but one with only a so-so screen. However, an available keyboard dock can make it a good choice for those that want to do work on their Android tablet. We judge the TF300 to be a little expensive in our review, but Best Buy is knocking $100 off the price and offering it up on Black Friday for $279. The Barnes & Noble Nook Color is a hybrid pipo u1 tablet/eReader that competes with the base Amazon Kindle Fire. Barnes & Noble cut the price of the Nook Color a few weeks back (to $139), and Walmart is putting it on sale at 10 p.m. on Black Friday for $99.

Could wearing a vest save your life? It may sound a preposterous idea, but scientists across the globe are working on a range of intimate gadgets clothes to monitor patients’ health — and even treat them. Over the past decade, extensive research has been carried out on the development of wearable medical sensors that can be embedded in everyday clothing. The thinking is that such devices will lead to quicker diagnosis and improve monitoring of at-risk patients, without interfering with their everyday life. From electronic vests to bras, we reveal the “smart” clothes that could be making their way into your wardrobe. Swiss researchers have developed a string vest designed to correct poor posture and tackle back pain. The technology, which has been in development at the University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland, uses sensors to detect the patient’s posture. The patient wears the vest for 24 hours — physiotherapists and doctors then assess the data gathered to calculate the postures that can lead to pain and damage in the patient’s neck, back or shoulders. The vest is then programmed to watch out for these potentially harmful postures. The sensors detect these and vibrate so that the wearer knows to change position. It could be available within two years. While incontinence pads can be highly effective, they can wick away the moisture so well the wearer is unaware of leakage. The new smart pants contain electro-conductive thread which sends a signal to an electronic sensor when it is exposed to fluid. The sensor then vibrates gently to alert the wearer. A study at Bristol Urological Institute shows that on 91 percent of occasions wearers were alerted by the sensor, and in 71 percent of cases it gave them sufficient time to change their pad. “This is a great breakthrough for incontinence sufferers,” says Professor Raj Persad, consultant urologist and senior clinical lecturer at Bristol University.“Apart from the stresses of dealing with the symptoms of incontinence, sufferers are at risk of social isolation and depression. This device helps restore dignity.” Devices such as this could be available within a year.

Last month US researchers announced they’d developed a “bra” that contains embedded sensors to spot temperature changes linked to cancer. Tumours need a blood supply to expand, and this blood causes heat changes in tissue. Some studies have shown that cancer cells exude nitric oxide, which triggers changes in blood flow and temperature in tissue surrounding cancer, which can be detected by the sensors. The device is expected to launch in Europe next year, but experts are cautious. Emma Smith, senior science officer at Cancer Research UK says: “There’s no evidence to show whether this bra is a reliable way to detect tumours.” This device, which resembles a thin life vest and is worn under clothes, delivers a shock to the chest if the heart falls into a life-threatening abnormal rhythm. Thousands of patients in Britain suffer from abnormal heart rhythms, and require a mini defibrillator to be implanted into their chest. However, while they are waiting for one to be fitted, or their old one to be changed, they have to remain in hospital. Doctors have developed a vest that a patient wears under their clothes, which delivers a shock if their heart goes into an abnormal rhythm. If a life-threatening rhythm is detected, the device alerts the patient before delivering an electric shock. Christopher Morley, consultant cardiologist at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, says: “This vest can be a useful bridge to implantation of a defibrillator pacemaker or renewal in one that is failing, or where the battery has abruptly depleted.“This enables the patient to be at home, rather than in hospital, while they wait for the procedure.” Worn around the neck like a necklace, the tiny camera has software to automatically take images every 30 seconds and is designed for people with memory problems or dementia, to help them recall the events of the day. Brain-scanning tests have shown that simply viewing these intimate gadgets review images activates nerve cells in areas of the brain responsible for memory, which leads to long-term improvements in memory and recall. Steve Hodges, who led the research at Cambridge University, says: “It suggests that stimulating these brain regions through the use of the camera may lead to improved memory and cognition in both healthy and memory-damaged patients.

Thanksgiving is all about, the answer will be shopping, not family and food and gratitude. Someday in the not too distant future, I fear that when an immigrant or foreigner asks an American what. Walmart plans to open it toy and hobbies stores at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Toys R Us, Kmart, Old Navy, Sears and Target also plan to open Thursday. Online retailers such as Amazon.com are promoting deals all week, so you don't even have to leave your house. Somehow we have allowed a holiday that was supposed to be about remembering how much we have to be thankful for — even in difficult times — morph into a holiday about what we don't have. I might be from the "give it to me now" generation, but I find this sickening. Of all of the holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving is the most quintessentially American. Sure, there's Independence Day, but most countries have a day like that. Thanksgiving is our tradition. It dates back to the 1600s to the days of early European settlers in a new land. We romanticize this era a bit in our history books, but the point is most American families were immigrants and farmers at one time. There's a unity here as we remember those struggles and those that helped. We can all recall grade school when half the class donned pilgrim garb and the others had American Indian-inspired dress and there was a symbolic sharing of food. We also celebrate coming together — as a family and a community. It's not an overtly religious holiday, but somehow it has a spiritual tone to it that resonates across every ethnic and religious background. Yet in the last decade, we have allowed America's retailers to co-opt this day for their own greed. It started with Black Friday, now the biggest shopping day of the year. The stores kept opening earlier and earlier. And sadly, shoppers keep showing up. I'm sorry to say that a few years ago, I went to Sears at 3 a.m. on Black Friday to buy a new home appliance at a deep discount.

But Thanksgiving was always sacred. The only people working were emergency types, hospital staff and a few journalists. It was bare bones. Even grocery stores closed. Now Black Friday has become Black Thursday and Friday, and it's increasingly feeling like any other day of the year. Most local grocery stores — Giant, Wegmans and Weis — will be open Thanksgiving Day until at least 3 p.m. Karns is the only one that is completely closed. Not only are more stores open, but I'm receiving ads encouraging me to come. Call me old-fashioned, but can't we just have one day that isn't a retail opportunity? It's bad enough that we've turned Veterans Day and Memorial Day, sacred times of reflection about the cost of our freedom, into shopping promos. Foreigners looking at America must think we are addicted to shopping and material things. But it's more than that. It's also about workers. These stores can't be open without a slew of workers, mostly low-income earners. What happened to wanting to encourage people to be with their families? Companies used to close on Thanksgiving because they wanted to be seen as a good employer and neighbor. Now it's just about the bottom line. Someone reminded me that Apple, one of the top global brands and consistently ranked as one of the top companies to work for, has given employees the entire week of Thanksgiving off with pay. Even Apple's retail employees get that time off, although they are asked to take some of the days at other points in the year. What a shame that so few other companies get it. I was also reminded recently that buying new or on impulse isn't always best. Family friends brought a 2- and 4-year-old over to my house. Because I don't have kids, I don't have a lot of classic toys. I worried about how I was going to entertain these little ones and contemplated buying something, but I never made it to the store.

Research In Motion is pushing for app quality, not quantity, with its make-or-break blackberry 9730 devices set for launch on January 30, and targeting applications to customers in various regions. RIM's projected 100,000 apps - a record for any new platform at launch - will still be a fraction of those available on Apple or Google devices. But it is a stronger showing than RIM's PlayBook tablet computer which was slammed at its 2011 launch for a dearth of apps and incomplete software. In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, RIM Chief Executive Thorsten Heins admitted that app libraries play a crucial role in the success or failure of smartphones. But he said the game is not just about numbers. "The tactic we are deploying is by country and by region. We are aiming to have the most important 200 to 400 apps available, because many applications are regional and they really do have a regional flavour," Heins said. RIM says it aims to offer both the most popular applications in the market, and also those most relevant to Blackberry aficionados - people Heins described as hyper-connected multi-taskers who need to get things done. RIM's ultra-secure BlackBerry was once the smartphone of choice for government and corporate elites. But rivals have taken giant bites out of RIM's market share, especially in North America, and the company's stock has slumped. The BlackBerry remains popular in many emerging markets, partly for its popular BBM messaging system. With this in mind, RIM has hosted events with developers across the globe.

"We've done 30 jam conferences in various cities all around the world, to get the bucket filled with meaningful local apps and not just a huge bunch of applications that you collect and throw at your audience," he said. "It is a very, very targeted approach." Heins, who has met with customers and carriers in a series of whirlwind global tours, came across as relaxed and confident in the interview, in RIM's Waterloo headquarters. Speaking rapid fire English with just a hint of an accent from his native Germany, he acknowledged that RIM's fate may depend on the success of BB10, but he said feedback from clients has been very encouraging. RIM hopes its new line of BB10 smartphones will help it claw back market share from Apple's iPhone and devices powered by Google's Android operating system. Developers say like what they see, but analysts are not convinced that RIM's gamble on BB10 will succeed. In terms of numbers, RIM's app offering will remain far behind the Apple and Google app stores, each of which boast over 700,000 apps. But Heins said he was not worried. "In my view it is really short-sighted to say, you have 600,000, you have 400,000 and you only have 100,000 apps, so you are not good," he said. "Look at how many actually get downloaded. ... BlackBerry App World today is still the most profitable portal for application developers - it has the highest number of paid for downloads." In a small dig at his rivals, he added: "We don't have 1,500 Solitaire apps. That is not what Blackberry best slide phones 2012 is about." RIM has already said it plans business focused apps from the likes of Cisco WebEx, Box, SAP and Blackboard, as well as music and movie apps like TuneIn, Nobex and Popcornflix and gaming apps from developers like Gameloft, Halfbrick and Paw Print Games.

Tablets are changing computing, there's no doubt. I realized this when I saw my 2-year-old son pick up an iPad and master its basic controls, including discovering a child's app, in about half an hour. The iPad led the way into this brave new world more or less alone at first. It has taken until now for the sheer pressure of innovation inside Apple's rivals to lead to some great Android-based tablet pc 3g finally making a mark. If you're a new owner of one of these, you'll be happy to know that there's many an app that will simultaneously thrill you, inform you and welcome you into the world of tablet computing. For a great news experience, the free app News360 has to be one of the better news-aggregating ones I've seen on any platform. When you first open the app, you are presented with a long list of topics that it can aggregate for your convenience into different categories, from arts through science to zombies. The app uses this profile to grab news from the Web and present it to you within its elegant interface. This is dominated by picture-based "tiles" for each news article the app collects. Each tile tells you the appropriate category, where the news item came from and when. Tapping on one of these tiles takes you to a new page that contains a screen grab of the original online source, alongside the text the app has collected from the article. The pleasure of News360 is that you can either satisfy your curiosity by tapping on a link to read the original article or decide you have learned enough and navigate on. You can also mark the article as interesting, save it for reading offline -- perhaps on a commute -- or share it on a social network. These controls are also accessible from the initial "tiles" screen, where you flip over an article's tile to see the controls. The flip is accompanied by a very pleasing animation. It's just a little graphical touch, but small details like this make an app great fun.

Part of the fun of having a new tablet is showing off its graphical prowess. Games are a great way to do this. I've had immense fun with Edge Extended (about $3 on Google Play). In this game, you play a multicolored cube that you roll around a blocky terrain to collect targets. You swipe your finger on the screen to make the cube flop onto its faces to move. There are all the classic elements of collecting points, avoiding pitfalls, activating switches and so on. But despite its graphical simplicity, the app is swift-paced and very satisfying; it even gave me that sensation of falling from a height in some of its trickier parts. If you really want to impress people with your tablet's screen, then you'll probably get a kick out of a game like Need for Speed Most Wanted ($7 on Google play). It's a racing game that uses motion to control steering and simple tap controls to brake, slide the car in a drift or turn on a nitrous turbo boost. True to the "Most Wanted" title, you race on regular roads, not racetracks, and can get in trouble with the police. This app has all the typical racing fun, along with the ability to earn points that unlock better cars and so on. But the standout feature is the attractiveness of the graphics, and the image rendering even includes reflections of passing buildings in puddles. It's really eye-popping, and it even works on a diminutive tablet like the Nexus 7. If racing's not your thing, you may like SoulCraft THD instead. In this hack-and-slash role-playing game, you control your character from above as it fights its way through a fantasy landscape of dungeons and cities. As on a standard computer action game, you can earn spells and improve your character's powers. The game is "freemium" so it's free to download and play, but you have to make in-game purchases with real money to advance quickly. The graphics are slick, but don't expect the kind of detailed rendering you would see on a gaming PC. If you want to make your pals who own iPads jealous, turn on an animated background. This shows off the computing power of your tablet and Android's skills, too. Right now my google android 7 tablet is rocking the seasonal Autumn Tree Live Wallpaper, which is $1. You can control all sorts of aspects of the app, including what type of trees wave their autumnal leaves in the wind, and it's delightful. It's also something that a stock iPad absolutely can't do.

Four new studies offer powerful evidence of the dangers of smoking ego electronic cigarette and the health benefits of quitting or not being exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking in the UK– Between 1996 and 2001 the Million Women Study started following more than one million women aged 50 to 65 years of age. In a report published in the Lancet, trial investigators, including renowned epidemiologist Richard Peto, found that 12-year mortality was significantly higher in women with a history of smoking compared to women who never smoked (rate ratio 2.76, CI 2.71-2.81). Smokers, the authors calculated, lose 10 years of life. The good news is that stopping smoking before the age of 40 reduces the excess mortality by 90%. Smoking in Japan– The Life Span Study, published in BMJ, was started in 1950 and has followed more than 65,000 men and women in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The results were consistent with the Million Women Study in the UK: the rate ratio for mortality was more than doubled for smokers compared to nonsmokers both for men (2.21, CI 1.97-2.48) and for women (2.61, CI 1.98-3.44). The investigators also reported that stopping smoking before age 35 eliminated almost all of the risk associated with smoking.

Smoke-free legislation meta-analysis– Smoking is not just a personal decision that has individual health effects. A new meta-analysis published in Circulation found that smoke-free legislation results in immediate reductions in hospital admissions or deaths for coronary events (RR .848, CI .816-.881), other heart disease (RR .610, CI .440-.847), cerebrovascular accidents (RR .840, CI .753-.936) and respiratory disease (RR .760, CI .682-.846). The authors, Crystal Tan and Stanton Glatz, also report that the biggest reductions in events were associated with the most stringent smoke-free laws. Smoke-free legislation in Minnesota– Here’s one more study to lend support to the above meta-analysis. In a paper published in Archives of Internal Medicine Richard Hurt and colleagues analyzed data before and after the implementation of a smoke-free law in Olmsted County, Minnesota and found a significant 33% reduction in the incidence of MI from 150.8 to 100.7 per 100000 people and a trend in the reduction of sudden cardiac death by 17% from 109.1 to 92.0 per 100,000 people. In an accompanying commentary, Sara Kalkhoran and Pamela Ling write that as “the evidence base documenting the positive health outcomes” of smoke-free legislation grows, “we should prioritize the enforcement of smoke-free policies, eliminating loopholes in existing policies as well as encouraging expansion of smoke-free policies to include multiunit housing, new electronics motor vehicles, casinos, and outdoor locations. Exposure to SHS should not be a condition of employment, and all workers, including those of lower income and those in the service and hospitality industries, should have equal protection from SHS exposure.”

Nokia, once the largest handset maker in the world, is going through a complicated phase with regard to blackberry 9730 smartphones. According to a report released by the IDC, the company is no longer listed among the top five global manufacturers of smartphones. It is the first time that the Finns are out of the rankings since the start of the analysis in 2004. Now, the list of the biggest manufacturers of smartphones in the world is as follows: Samsung, Apple, RIM, ZTE and HTC. According to IDC, the transition from Symbian OS to Windows Phone has not been particularly successful for Nokia. However, according to the same report, there is still some space for Nokia to regain its position in the market of smartphones. With that in mind, Nokia has launched two high-end devices: Lumia 820 and Lumia 920. Both run the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, Windows Phone 8, bring some excellent features like PureView and wireless charging. These features provide a hope for Nokia to get back to its original position in the market. Lumia 920 caught the attention of specialized sites, which claim that it can compete with its famous rivals such as iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III. With 4.5'' screen (smaller than the S III) and 4G LTE connectivity, the Lumia 920 has 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of data storage and is powered by a 1.5GHz chip dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. One of the greatest advantages of the device is its camera of 8.7 MP. Nokia assures that it is the best camera ever made for a smartphone and is better able to capture good images in low light. iPhone 4S was criticized for its image quality in the dark and iPhone 5 is only marginally better than its predecessor.

Meanwhile, only the reception of Windows Phone 8 will determine the success or failure of the Lumia 920. Similar to Windows 8 for desktops, Windows Phone 8 requires the user to "relearn" to exploit Windows. Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer claims that Windows Phone 8 will create a strong competition to Android based devices and iPhones, managing to reach the third place in smartphone market. However, Microsoft doesn't have a good record when it comes to mobile OS but the company is spending a lot on advertising. With the launch of Windows 8 handsets, doubts about the actual models have begun to arise. CNET conducted certain tests to check which cellphone has the best camera. Smartphones that were used for testing were Nokia Lumia 920, HTC Windows Phone 8X and iPhone 5. The pictures were taken in various lighting, trying to emulate all kinds of situations in which cell phones are used. In the ten tests, the Lumia 920 and its 8.7 MP camera was the best in seven situations, while the iPhone 5 emerged victorious in two and HTC won just one. Its camera might be great but if Nokia has to compete with biggies like Apple, Samsung, Google and ZTE, it will have to pull its act together quickly. While it is doing a great job by ditching Symbian and choosing Windows 8, Nokia may also stand to gain by releasing a few models running on Android. This would help the company to reestablish itself in the smartphone market. The competition is very formidable and Nokia cannot expect to sit quietly after releasing two models. Samsung has beaten all sales records with the Galaxy S III, which sold more than 30 million devices since its launch. Undoubtedly the best selling Android device of all time, it surpassed its predecessors in just 157 days. The numbers of the new cheap cell phones model outweigh that of Galaxy S II, launched in 2011. Galaxy S II sold about 10 million units in the same period of time. Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy S3 defeated Apple's iPhone 5 under the categories of Best Gadget and Best Smartphone of 2012, titles awarded at the Stuff Gadget Awards 2012.

Asus is best known for building motherboards and video cards, but the company also has a solid reputation for designing and manufacturing high-end PC sound cards. Asus now takes audio processing outside the computer, with the spectacular Xonar Essence One. The Xonar is a sample-rate converter, a USB DAC (digital-to-analog converter), a stand-alone DAC (with both coaxial and optical digital inputs), a sample-rate converter, a pre-amp (with both XLR and RCA stereo outputs), and a sweet headphone catv amplifier. As a USB audio device, the Xonar keeps the PC’s stereo audio output in the digital domain until it reaches the Xonar. It can accept signals with either 16- or 24-bit resolution, with sampling rates of between 44.1- and 192kHz. When the bit stream reaches the Xonar, an onboard DSP (digital signal processor) upsamples the signal to 32-bit resolution, and it symmetrically upconverts the sampling rate by a factor of up to eight. A 16-bit, 44.1kHz signal (the resolution and sampling rate of an audio CD) is converted to 32-bit resolution at a sampling rate of 352.8kHz (44.1 x 8), as would input signals with sampling rates of 88.2- or 176.4kHz). A 16-bit, 48kHz signal, meanwhile, gets converted to 32-bit resolution and a sampling rate of 384kHz (48 x 8), as would signals with sampling rates of 96- or 192kHz. Upsampling is known to improve the quality of the signal that’s presented to the DAC (digital-to-analog converter), much in the same way that upsampling a digital photo can enable you to enlarge the image without seeing jagged edges. Theoretically, the higher the resolution and sampling rate, the higher the audio quality. Icing the cake, Asus claims the Xonar delivers a signal-to-noise ratio of 120dB.

Asus provides optional ASIO (Audio Stream Input/Output) drivers for the Xonar, so that ASIO-compatible playback software (I happened to use Fubar with the ASIO add-on) will bypass the normal Windows audio path and connect directly to the hardware. There’s a twofold advantage to using an ASIO driver: It reduces latency (which isn’t all that important for this application, but is critical for professional audio-recording applications), and it bypasses the Windows audio API so that the bit stream goes straight to the Xonar without undergoing any processing or being changed in any way. When the ASIO driver is used, a “bit perfect” LED glows on the Xonar’s faceplate, indicating that the device is receiving the exact bitstream from the recording. I connected the Xonar to my Windows PC’s USB port and performed my listening tests using a pair of Ultrasone HFI-2400 headphones. These cans aren’t particularly difficult for a headphone amp to drive, being rated at 70 ohms of impedance, but Asus claims the Xonar’s amp can handle models presenting up to 600 ohms of impedance. I used several recordings that I’m intimately familiar with after repeated listening sessions, including Accidental Powercut Session 1, from Bowers & Wilkin’s Society of Sound subscription music service. This album of live binaural recordings was made specifically for headphone listening, using microphones inside a dummy head on the stage. The tracks were encoded at the studio as losslessly compressed FLAC files at a sampling rate of 44.1kHz with 16-bit resolution. Listening to the instrumental track “Ant House,” from Speakers Corner Quartet, I was impressed with the Xonar’s ability to render the band’s unique combination of cello, flute, contrabass, and drums with incredible detail without adding coloration. If you find this transparency too sterile for your taste, you can replace the Xonar’s operational new electronics amplifiers (op/amps) with something warmer, since the ICs come installed in user-serviceable sockets instead of being soldered to the circuit board, as is the more common manufacturing technique.

Research In Motion (RIM) is witnessing a spurt in India sales ahead of the launch of its new operating system BlackBerry 10 and more than six months after it announced steep price cuts. A possible explanation, analysts said, could be that the struggling Canadian phonemaker is disgorging its stocks of slide phones 2012 handsets loaded with the older operating system to stockists and retailers. During October, sales jumped by around 25%, according to data from one of its national distributors RedingtonBSE 1.19 %. Amit Mathur, director of sales at RIM in India confirmed the spurt in sales in recent months, but attributed it to the rise of third-generation, high-speed mobile Internet services in India and increasing awareness among consumers about smartphones. The sudden rise in sales goes against a trend which shows that BlackBerry has been losing market share to rival phones based on Google's Android operating system. Between November 2011 and June 2012, RIM's market share fell from 18% to 12% in India, according to data from Cybermedia Research. While RIM does not disclose the number of phones sold in India, a recent report by brokerage Nomura said average monthly sales in the July-September quarter was 60,000-70,000 units. In October, that spiked to about 85,000 units. Technology market researcher Gartner said that BlackBerry's sales in India have been stagnant for a long time.

"The company has been offloading a large amount of inventory to distributors in anticipation of BlackBerry 10's launch. The recent uptick in its India sales was primarily due to that," said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. But an RIM spokesman said the sales jump was enabled by special festive schemes, easy financing options as well as expansion in sales reach. Analysts estimate that about 102 million mobile handsets were sold in India during the first six months of 2012, including about 6 million smartphones. Samsung had a 42% share of India's smartphone market and Nokia 19%. RIM once had a commanding share of the smartphone market but has since been on a slippery ground in the face of new touch-based devices from Apple as well as Samsung, whose phones run on Google's Android operating system. RIM, whose shares listed on Nasdaq have fallen over 80% over the past two years, is now looking for a fresh lease of life with the launch of new handsets running on its new operating system BB10. Success of the devices will depend to a great extent on applications relevant to enterprises, who make up a bulk of RIM's customers. According to research firm IDC, blackberry 9730 has a 4.8% share of the global smartphone market, compared to 11.5% last year.

The other night I was at an information evening at my children’s school here in Melbourne, Australia. The evening was being held by the senior primary teachers and the school principal to discuss their research into running a 1:1 iPad program for the Grade 5 and 6 students next year (that is roughly ages 11 and 12 here in Australia). I’d been asked to say a few words, as a parent, but also as someone the principal knew worked primarily in and around education google android 7 tablet technology. I am a fan of technology in education, but definitely not a techevangelist; he wanted me to talk about the potential. I said I would, but I also wanted to talk about the dangers. As it turned out – I spoke about neither. In the previous weeks, I’d spent some time in my two sons’ classes doing some work with the 10 iPads the school already has. You can see the results in the image above – that was the final outcome of a short lesson that taught the students to consider the breadth of how they might use tablet devices as part of their school work, and to see how they could collaborate (even in isolation from each other) to create something. Just like the creators of computer games, or websites, or movies or any number of things do every day. You see, I love the potential of 21st century technology to help us rethink the way we structure the way we learn. I want my children to enter a world beyond school where they are seeking opportunities, where they are adaptable and flexible and able to use technology to enrich their relationships, to be more efficient, to express themselves creatively and to play and trial things and to fail and try again. Like many in the educational technology space I am interested in attaching my ideas around a new type of education to the thing that is most rapidly changing in our lives at the moment – technology!

So, I’m sitting in a room with a whole bunch of parents and all the issues about trolling and email and keeping children safe from the big bad world of the internet slowly takes over the conversation and presentation. I feel uncomfortable, that this government-run school has to ask parents to pay for the technology if they want it and I feel worse for the parents who are standing there and thinking, “I don’t know how I can afford this.” I am frustrated by the guy who keeps interrupting because he thinks he know so much about the technology sides of things, but is deliberately being obstructionist (possibly because he is feeling a bit anxious at the prices being paraded before us on the interactive whiteboard). But, amid the usual palaver of anything related to children’s education and diverse school communities I saw and heard something else. I saw a group of teachers explain a journey that they had been on, over almost a year, they were able to explain their own anxieties, issues and challenges in thinking through how they could use mobile technology in the classroom. It was 8.30pm at night, and they were not getting paid, yet they were standing up in front of a whole group of parents and talking about why this excited them, why it excited the children and how it changed and improved the way they taught via tablet pipo u1. They talked to the energy and enthusiasm they had seen in children who previously had been difficult to engage, they talked about how they saw it helping them better communicate and build a relationship with parents and they talked about how children could easily share work at home and begin to change the way parents could interact with their children’s education. They talked about teaching collaboration, creativity and communication. They were energetic, they were passionate, and they were sincere.

Think of how many health & beauty products you apply in a single day. You could easily have used ten before even leaving the house — all of them with their own scent, fighting for our olfactory attention. No wonder that recent research from Mintel found that 28 per cent of us would prefer our skincare to come without a scent. And while you might not think you’re allergic to perfume, if you’re in the 60 per cent of people who class their skin as being sensitive, you might find that it’s the fragrance in your potions and lotions that is causing your skin to react. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting says fragrance is the most common cause of allergy due to cosmetics — and there are more than 5,000 synthetic fragrance compounds used by the beauty industry. She recommends that when it comes to facial skincare, patients should avoid perfumed products.‘Given that most of the effective active ingredients that tackle issues such as hyperpigmentation and blemishes can potentially cause some irritation, it makes sense to minimise any other potential sources of problems,’ she says.‘Fragrance is often used in skincare to give products a sense of indulgence, but it doesn’t serve a functional purpose and can irritate or induce allergic contact dermatitis, causing redness, burning, itching and swelling.’

In the U.S., companies are not just discouraging the use of fragranced products in the workplace, they’re actually banning them after one woman, who suffered from allergies, successfully sued her former employer, claiming perfume worn by colleagues had prevented her from doing her job. If it serves no functional purpose, why is fragrance added to products at all? Sometimes it might be to mask a formulation’s unpleasant natural smell or to improve the experience to encourage people to use it. Or it can signal something about the product, such as who it is for or its intended use. ‘A woman in her 40s may have more sophisticated tastes than a teen,’ says Dr Sian Morris, principal scientist at Olay.‘A luxury night cream may have a sophisticated floral note while an invigorating day lotion may be more citrusy.’ But cosmetic companies do seem to be cottoning on to the fact that we’d quite like our products to come without a pong. Not only is Olay’s newest product an unscented version of its Regenerist 3-Point Treatment Cream, but even toiletries that are known for the way they smell have started to give up their signature scents. Take Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream, £25, a product that fans swear by for relieving dry, chapped skin and soothing all manner of minor irritations. Its strong, medicinal smell is one you either love or hate. Clearly enough people fell into the latter camp that it was worth creating a fragrance-free version. While not entirely lacking in smell, it’s certainly a much toned-down version of the original.Similarly, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula, £3.67, renowned for its chocolatey scent, now comes in a fragrance-free formulation that retains a slight whiff of cocoa, but without the overly sweet lingering smell it is known for. The fact that these china cheap wholesale products still smell of something shows just how hard it is to find truly unscented products.

IN ROOMS and garages all over the nation, dreams are being made. Nimble fingers and minds are poring over plans, turning to trusted confidants and losing sleep as heavenly and hellish creations alike are hatched and made reality. Then during the day, ''cosplayers'', such as Brisbane's Jemima Cowderoy, walk among us, perfectly camouflaged as teachers, students and other save-the-world type occupations, the only hint to their secret anime/manga/fantasy alter egos a sparkle in their eye and a better Facebook profile photo. Cosplay, short for china wholesale apparel costume play, is a performance art, which for Trekkies, has been around for decades, but Japan made cool. Participants often sacrifice months to create the perfect costume which references an anime or manga (Japanese/Asian graphic novels, comics and animation) hero or villain as well as Disney, science fiction, video game, comic and fantasy characters. Time and money, says Ms Cowderoy, a long-time cosplayer and University of Queensland PhD student, are also a factor, although it depends on the costume and the dedication to detail. Costumes can take anywhere from a weekend to make, says Ms Cowderoy, and leave you change from $100 - or take years and cost thousands of dollars.

The 24-year-old has decided not to take part in competitions for the time being, but still judges and consults. ''It is very time- and money-consuming when you are competing,'' she said. ''So I have just taken a break from that at the moment to concentrate on some other things.'' Ms Cowderoy came to cosplay late by player standards - she was 18. Most start becoming serious when they are just 15. After changing her mind about an acting career, Ms Cowderoy was ''in a bit of a creative black hole'' when a friend asked her to come to a cosplay event at the popular culture expo Supanova. Having never sewn before, Ms Cowderoy ''improvised'' a costume from the anime series Evangelion. ''Even though I looked completely horrific, my costume really was that bad, everyone was just really friendly and creative and it was just such a supportive environment; I was hooked,'' she said. Since then Ms Cowderoy, whose PhD subject is the representation of rape in non-commercial fiction, has nearly 40 characters, including Cinderella, Rose from Dr Who, Merlin and a host of manga and anime characters, including from her favourite Code Geass. It's not all fun and games, though. Participants spend hours learning new sewing techniques, as well as how to work with materials such as hard plastics and metals, as they are judged on the difficulty of their costume, the accuracy, the craftsmanship and the entertainment value. A costume is only one part of the performance, as cosplayers, often participate in teams and are expected to create and perform a short entertainment piece, which uses the characters they are referencing, as well as tell a short story. And it's serious business; Madman, an entertainment distribution company, sponsors many of the nation's cosplay events and offers prizes such as trips to Japan for the anime expos. The final of this year's National Cosplay Championship will be held at the Brisbane Supanova event next month. Team Queensland is going plushie. Team Victoria has been madly knitting chain mail. What the other five teams are up to is anyone's guess. But what is for sure is that the number of hinata hyuga cosplay enthusiasts in Australia is growing, as fans look for fresh and fun ways to engage with their favourite characters or stories.

Are your kids' closets ready for cooler temps? No? With snow already falling in some parts of the country and near-freezing nighttime temperatures being recorded, now is the perfect time to give your boys and girls rain jacket that will last them all winter long. Like adult gear, kids' outerwear comes with its own lingo that can quickly get muddled – making it easy to buy more (or less) jacket than is really necessary. Here's a primer to help you get just what they need. Down insulation. Down is made up of fine, fluffy goose or duck feathers. It's lightweight and warm – and works efficiently (just like Mother Nature designed it to). Although down is most commonly found in jackets, it can sometimes be seen in other outerwear, like snow pants, hats and gloves. Pros: Ounce-for-ounce, it's warmer than synthetic and has a high warmth-to-weight ratio. Cons: Loses its insulating properties when it's wet, is slow to dry, and usually requires special cleaning. Synthetic insulation. Man-made insulation is usually polyester threading that's molded to mimic down. Thinner, lighter threads are used to fill voids and trap warm air, while thicker strands give jackets and coats loft. Pros: Provides insulation even when wet, dries quickly and is generally less expensive than down. Cons: Bulkier, breaks down over time, degrades faster than down.

Down outerwear is usually graded by fill power – and tells you how many ounces of down you'll find in a cubic inch. The higher the number, the better the jacket's insulating ability. Some synthetic jackets' insulation is described similarly (i.e. equivalent to 500 down fill power); that way you can easily compare jackets. Alternately, synthetic jackets are sometimes rated as effective to a specific temperature. Think of this as a waterproof windbreaker with no insulation. Depending on your kids' jackets, they may be able to zip their insulated jacket into a hard shell or can layer them while skiing or playing in the snow. Like a hard shell, these girls' and boys' china wholesale apparel jackets are great for snow, but they're usually only water-resistant instead of waterproof. They're also generally insulated, but can be layered for super-cold conditions.

Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook's new go-to management team of mostly familiar faces failed to drum up much excitement on Wall Street, driving its shares to a three-month low on Wednesday. The world's most valuable iphone gadgets and accessories technology company, which had faced questions about a visionary-leadership vacuum following the death of Steve Jobs, on Monday stunned investors by announcing the ouster of chief mobile software architect Scott Forstall and retail chief John Browett -- the latter after six months on the job. Cook gave most of Forstall's responsibilities to Macintosh software chief Craig Federighi, while some parts of the job went to Internet chief Eddy Cue and celebrated designer Jony Ive. But the loss of the 15-year veteran and Jobs's confidant Forstall, and resurgent talk about internal conflicts, exacerbated uncertainty over whether Cook and his lieutenants have what it takes to devise and market the next ground-breaking, industry-disrupting product. Apple shares ended the day down 1.4 percent at 595.32. They have shed a tenth of their value this month -- the biggest monthly loss since late 2008, and have headed south since touching an all-time high of $705 in September. For investors, the management upheaval from a company that usually excels at delivering positive surprises represents the latest reason for unease about the future of a company now more valuable than almost any other company in the world. Apple undershot analysts targets in its fiscal third quarter, the second straight disappointment. Its latest Maps software was met with widespread frustration and ridicule over glaring mistakes. Sources told Reuters that Forstall and Cook disagreed over the need to publicly apologize for its maps service embarrassment.

And this month, Apple entered the small-tablet market with its iPad mini, lagging Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc despite pioneering the tablet market in 2010. Investor concerns now center around the demand, availability and profitability of new products, including the iPad mini set to hit stores on Friday. "The sudden departure of Scott Forstall doesn't help," said Shaw Wu, an analyst with Sterne Agee. "Now there's some uncertainty in the management." "There appears to be some infighting, post-Steve Jobs, and looks like Cook is putting his foot down and unifying the troops." Apple declined to comment beyond Monday's announcement. Against that backdrop, Cook's inner circle has some convincing to do. In the wake of Forstall's exit, iTunes maestro Eddy Cue -- dubbed "Mr Fixit", the sources say -- gets his second promotion in a year, taking on an expanded portfolio of all online services, including Siri and Maps. The affable executive with a tough negotiating streak who, according to documents revealed in court, lobbied Jobs aggressively and finally convinced the late visionary about the need for a smaller-sized tablet, has become a central figure: a versatile problem-solver for the company. Ive, the British-born award-winning designer credited with pushing the boundaries of engineering with the iPod and iphone gadgets, now extends his skills into the software realm with the lead on user interface. Marketing guru Schiller continues in his role, while career engineer Mansfield canceled his retirement to stay on and lead wireless and semiconductor teams. Then there's Federighi, the self-effacing software engineer who a source told Reuters joined Apple over Forstall's initial objections, and has the nickname "Hair Force One" on Game Center. "With a large base of approximately 60,400 full-time employees, it would be easy to conclude that the departures are not important," said Keith Bachman, analyst with BMO Capital Markets. "However, we do believe the departures are a negative, since we think Mr. Forstall in particular added value to Apple."

In today's society, there aren't many things that people are more attached to than their cheap cell phones. A person's cell phone is his or her gateway into everything that goes on in his or her life. With the recent advances in technology, it now seems as if your cell phone can do everything that your computer can do. It then comes as no surprise that your cell phone could cost as much as it does. If you're in the market for a phone that will do nearly everything, then you should expect to pay a lot of money. The iPhone may be the most popular cell phone to ever exist. When it comes to brand recognition, it is in a league of its own. When someone says that he or she has an Android or Windows phone, you will have to ask him or her for more clarification. When someone says that he or she has an iPhone, you know exactly what he or she is talking about. Apple just recently released the iPhone 5, and it's the newest addition to the iPhone family. The iPhone 5 has several improvements, and Apple is hailing it as "the best iPhone ever." Apple has also set a high price to justify these claims. Off contract, the smallest version of the iPhone 5 (16 GB of memory) will cost you a staggering $649.99. If you would like to have more space, then the 32 GB and 64 GB models will cost you $749.99 and $849.99, respectively.

We all know about the ongoing battle between Apple and Samsung. You may have noticed Samsung's new commercial for the S3 which subtly mocks the iPhone without actually mentioning the Apple product by name. The Galaxy S3 is the latest flagship phone from Samsung. The phone's main marketing push stems from the fact that it does everything the iPhone does for cheaper. However, the Galaxy S3 is not that much cheaper than the iPhone. The retail price for the 16 GB and 32 GB offerings of the Galaxy S3 are $589.99 and $649.99, respectively. The Droid Razr Maxx is Motorola's latest attempt to capitalize on the Android market. The phone is thin and has the longest-lasting battery life of any of the 4G LTE capable phones on the market. A long-lasting battery is very desirable to consumers. When you are on the phone so often, you need it to last. That kind of advantage does not come cheap, and with a $649.99 price tag, the Droid Razr Maxx stacks up price-wise to big-name competitors in the smartphone market. The Samsung Galaxy Note brought with it one of the major innovations in the electronics gadgets smartphone market. It is a combination of a tablet and smartphone. The aim of the Galaxy Note was to combine all the features of the tablet with the portability of a smartphone. The Note retails for $599.99.

The world's largest athletic footwear company, Nike Inc . recently announced that it is selling its Umbro brand to Iconix Brand Group Inc. for a sum of $225 million. The company is expecting to close the deal by the end of 2012. In an effort to cut costs and sharpen focus on its namesake and other brands, Nike, in May this year, first revealed the intention of offloading its two brands - Cole Haan and Umbro. The company has been facing a number of challenges, such as rising labor and material costs along with uncertainty in European economies and decelerating future orders in china wholesale apparel due to the poor performances of these brands. Moreover, according to Nike, performances of these brands' do not match with that of its other brands. In a move to improve its soccer-related apparel and equipment business, Nike bought Umbro in 2008 for $578 million. Currently, the brand has more than 30 licenses in over 100 nations. However, Nike now believes that its own brand has become much stronger and has the capability to serve the needs of the footballers. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York, Iconix Brand Group is a brand management company engaged in licensing, marketing and supporting a diversified and growing consumer brand portfolio by providing licenses. The company licenses its brands worldwide through its retail and wholesale licenses for use in connection with a broad variety of product categories, including footwear, fashion accessories, sportswear, home products and décor as well as beauty and fragrance, and in the case of Sharper Image brand, consumer electronics and novelty products. Iconix Brand Group will own 29 iconic consumer brands, after the buyout of Umbro brand.

We believe Nike's decision to divest its two underperforming brands will boost its bottom line. Meanwhile, in an attempt to expand its global reach and market share, Nike is capitalizing on growth opportunities in emerging markets, especially China. The company is focusing on other tools, such as a direct-to-consumer business model, to expand geographically. We believe that Nike's continued investment in China and focus on the direct-to-consumer business will not only help in expanding market share, but also will facilitate strengthening its competitive position. However, we prefer to be on the sidelines given sluggish discretionary spending, increase in operating costs, and ongoing European crisis. We retain a long-term 'Neutral' recommendation on Nike. The company, which competes with PVH Corporation ( PVH ) and Brown Shoe Company Inc. ( BWS ), currently has a Zacks #2 Rank, which translates into a short-term Buy rating. Nike is the industry leader in the U.S. footwear and athletic beach shorts for men apparel industry. Over the years, the company has acquired many well-known brands to further strengthen its leadership position.

The PS3 controller is quite good-looking and even better to hold. It is available in many colors to suit your taste. The simple design and great ergonomics make it suitable for just about any game that supports a controller. If your PC has a bluetooth adapter, you don't have to worry about using USB ports to set up signal transmitters, and you will never have to go out and buy batteries. Paired with the DS3 tool software, the psp go cable gamepad becomes a fully capable PC input device and also doubles as a media controller for music and movies. After using it, you will probably be wondering why you have ever used anything else. I like everything about the PS3 controller and after looking very hard, I cannot find any flaws. I myself own three, and would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. There are many DUALSHOCK 3 drivers on the interweb and after experimenting with a few, none delivered the solid performance and stability of DS3 tool. The user interface is easy to use, numerous tutorials are available and it is frequently updated with added functionality for the controller. If you look hard enough you will find mini-games on the web that support the motion-sensing feature of the controller, or you can simply map motion inputs to keys in the game. My only complaint is the required internet connection to run the software, but then again the program is free.

The PS3 controller in tandem with DS3 tool make for a great gaming experience. With the right profile selected, the controller is ready to go. The performance of the controller in just about every game is stellar; there are no drops in signal, no unregistered button presses, no surprises. Regardless of what color you get, the DUALSHOCK 3 color looks great. It is by no means a simpleton, but at the same time there is nothing outlandish about it. It is simply perfect and hard not to like. The software allows ample customization options, including changing vibration strength and toggling turbo mode for specific buttons. With a bluetooth adapter, wireless gameplay is great but if you seek additional assurance, all you need do is connect it with a USB cable and you're good to go. The software is very responsive and has never crashed during the testing period. Users have reported problems with the program, but they were likely due to unsupported adapters or older unstable versions. For a price of $39.99 (Newegg / Amazon), the sony psp accessories DualShock 3 wireless gamepad isn't a bad deal. You might be thinking that since it costs the same as the Xbox controller, why not just get the Xbox gamepad and be done with it? The goal of this article is not to bash the 360 controller; it is a great controller and you wouldn't have made a bad choice in getting one. However, if you want to avoid buying AA batteries and if you have a tendency to lose things (the 360 adapter), then the DUALSHOCK 3 is the controller for you.

Just weeks after its momentous launch of the iPhone 5, Apple is back with what is expected to be another hot gadget a "mini" version of its market-leading buy ipad accessories tablet. Apple sent out invitations for an event Tuesday in San Jose, California, keeping details under wraps as it normally does, saying only "We've got a little more to show you." Reports have been swirling for months about the "iPad Mini," but Apple has made no comment. But blogs which closely monitor Apple say the new tablet could be priced from $249 to $399, which could pressure rivals such as the Amazon Kindle Fire. The event comes a little over a month after Apple released the iPhone 5, the latest model of its iconic smartphone, which was greeted with record sales. The October 23 gathering is three days ahead of the release of Microsoft's new Surface tablet and two days before Apple reports quarterly earnings. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Apple has begun production of 10 million of the new iPads. Some reports say it may be available November 2. Analysts say Apple is virtually guaranteed a hit on release, but that the long-term outlook is less clear. "For Apple, given its well-oiled product marketing machine, 10 million is not a surprise," said Roger Kay, a consultant and analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates. "They will also likely take some of the wind out of the sails of the others like Amazon." But Kay said that although Apple essentially created the tablet market with the 10-inch iPad, it is making a "defensive" move with the new device, expected to have a screen of 7.85 inches (20 centimeters). He said it is not clear if Apple will be dominant in that segment of the market, which has established products from Amazon, Samsung and others.

"Apple wouldn't have gone into this if others hadn't," he said. "The bar has been set by Amazon. Even though the Kindle is not the same kind of device, it does what it does very well." The Kindle Fire proved popular last year, and a new version was launched last month. Meanwhile the small-format Google Nexus 7 joined the Samsung Galaxy in the seven-inch tablet market. Also in the mix will be Microsoft's Surface a late entry in the market which has a 10.6-inch screen and starts at $499, challenging the larger-format iPads. With Kindles selling from $199, Apple will be forced to keep its price low for its new model and "will not have its normal profit margin," said Kay. And some blogs say Google may sell a tablet as low as $99. Analyst Shaw Wu at Sterne Agee said the iPad Mini "is the competition's worse nightmare" but that sales will depend on how Apple prices the device. "We do not believe Apple needs to price as low as $199 to match Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD but believe a price point of $299 or $349 makes sense," he said. "The key question is whether Apple decides to price in-line with its margin model, or does it get aggressive to 'go for the kill' against competitors?" Ben Reitzes at Barclays said the Mini may erode some sales of the larger iPad but will grow the market. "We believe a smaller iPad could be useful in promoting Apple's agenda in education with e-textbooks," he said. "Also, the form factor could make more sense for gaming." Jack Gold, analyst with J. Gold Associates, said Apple needs to get into the small tablet segment to maintain its leadership. "There is a perception in the marketplace that Apple has lost some of its innovation capability, and if they can come out with an electronics gadgets iPad Mini that is groundbreaking, which will be hard to do, they can get some of that aura back," Gold said. Gold said Apple will have to wow consumers with the new device to protect its turf.

The dust has settled from Apple’s unsurprising “surprise” iPhone 5 announcement and case makers have been scrambling to either update or innovate on old designs and get your iPhone’s covered. I like the iphone gadgets and accessories design and it feels like a shame to wrap it up at times – but I’m also aware that it’s a £700 piece of technology just sitting in my pocket waiting to be broken and it never hurts to be cautious. Plus case designs have become better and better, becoming an important way to differentiate your phone in a world where an awful lot of people have already joined the cult of Cupertino. Post iPhone 5 release my inbox was flooded with 3D models and artist mock-ups of iPhone 5 cases but I thought I’d take a look at some of the cases that had actual made it to market. QDOS Smoothies Racing, is as you’d expect from the name, an extremely streamlined case which snugly protects your treasure. The case comes in purple, khaki and blue with transparent sides and cut out sections to access your volume/mute controls. The coloured backing is scratch proof and on a raise bevel edge, with the the transparent edges somehow making the colour pop a little more. Griffin are stalwarts at the Apple accessories market and can be relied upon to hit the ground running. They have released a number of cases to cover (sometimes puns happen, get over it) the iPhone 5 market. The Mustachio is a smooth, impact-resistant polycarbonate shell case which cases in on the moustache craze that seems to be sweeping the nation (every other Internet profile I see seems to be a woman ironically pretending to have a moustache or a man who has ironically grown one). Simple, to the point and on trend. If you’re less cool there is the Moxy, another hard shell case but with time with an understated wild jungle pattern. This case isn’t as visually striking until you get up close but the pattern has amazing texture and feels great to rub. If you’d rather the iPhone design spoke for itself, there’s the Reveal, slim-fit case which has an ultra-thin see-through hard shell and a protect rubber, “flex” edging to protect from drops.

If protection is your thing I urge to try other Massive Attack albums (I’ve dated myself with that joke, both in terms of time and also that only I would want to hang around with me), but also to look at the Protector, rubbery silicone skin case that absorbs jolts and bumps but also protects your iPhone from looking good. If even that’s not good enough then you need to get serious with the military-grade Survivor. The equivalent of driving your iphone gadgets around in a tank, the Survivor protects against sand, dust, wind, rain and being dropped. It also comes with a heavy-duty belt clip. All these cases have an RRP of £19.99 with the exception of the Protector which is £14.99 and the Survivor which is £34.99.

Lenovo Group Ltd said slowing demand in the personal-computer market, where it overtook Hewlett-Packard Co (HP) as the global leader last quarter, was good reason for the company to expand into china smartphone. Lenovo, founded in 1984 with the equivalent of $25,000, has swelled to become a manufacturer valued at $8.4 billion, helped by takeovers, including International Business Machines Corp’s personal computer (PC) unit in 2005. Lenovo was already the second-largest smartphone maker in China and planed to seize the top spot from Samsung Electronics, Milko Van Duijl, president for the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions, said in Hong Kong today. “Our goal is definitely to get to number one and not only to take smartphones into the China market but also into emerging markets.”Van Duijl said Lenovo had just begun selling handsets in Indonesia and India would follow, as Chief Executive Officer Yang Yuanqing moved closer to his goal of extending its PC dominance to smartphones and tablet computers.“Despite the challenges in the global PC market, Lenovo continues to expand in both emerging markets and mature markets at the expense of its competitors,” Miles Xie, a Hong Kong-based analyst with Bocom International Holdings Co, wrote in a report today. Lenovo’s efforts are allowing the company to “rapidly expand its market share in the China smartphone market,” wrote Xie, who has a buy rating on the shares. Lenovo, whose headquarters are in Beijing and Morrisville, North Carolina, closed at HK$6.33 in Hong Kong trading, unchanged from yesterday. The Hang Seng Index rose 0.5 percent.

There is definitely a slowdown in the market in all parts of the world, however, we are so strong in China that was a good reason for us to expand into smartphones,” Van Duijl said. In China, Lenovo has a smartphone market share of 11.5 per cent, surpassing the iPhone, Van Duijl said, without giving a figure for the Apple device. As Lenovo expands in mobile devices, the company would build its own cloud-computing services and online store to create an eco-system for the products, he said. Lenovo won’t make its own cheap cell phones mobile operating system and would stick with Google’s Android and Microsoft Windows 8, Van Duijl said. Worldwide PC shipments fell 8.3 per cent from a year earlier to 87.5 million in the third quarter, according to Stamford, Connecticut-based Gartner Inc. Lenovo saw the PC market slowdown as temporary, Van Duijl said. Global PC shipments would rise to 530 million units within two to three years, from 350 million units now, he said. Lenovo accounted for 15.7 per cent of global PC shipments last quarter, overtaking Hewlett-Packard, with 15.5 per cent, for the first time, Gartner said earlier. The Chinese firm narrowed HP’s lead in the quarter with a market share of 15.7 per cent, compared with 15.9 per cent for the Palo Alto, California-based maker, according to IDC, another market researcher. IDC’s study included so-called workstations, the more powerful desktop devices used for such tasks as engineering, architecture and video-game development.

Like most well-adjusted Americans, I check my smartphone every 5 to 10 seconds. If I don't, my hands sweat and I feel guilty for depriving the world of all the interesting things I have to say or text or tweet. This anxiety always seemed perfectly normal. Until I learned about "nomophobia." Apparently we have become so reliant on mobile devices that a term was created to describe the nervousness we experience when separated from our electronic self-affirmation machines. Could it be that I, America's most-beloved workplace advice columnist, am nomophobic? A study released in February — sponsored by the British neck strap lanyard cellphone technology company SecurEnvoy — found that about two-thirds of the population suffers from this phobia. And since work is one of life's primary ways of keeping us away from our cellphones and iPads, I decided to learn more. "It's not necessarily a clinical disorder at this point, unless it's causing real impairment in a person's social, occupational or personal life," said Elizabeth Waterman, a clinical psychologist at Morningside Recovery Center in Newport Beach, Calif., which offers a nomophobia recovery group. "But it can be a real problem for many people." The symptoms include: frequently checking the cellphone; frequently making sure the cellphone has battery life; using it in inappropriate places, like during business meetings or family dinners; and frequently checking to make sure the phone is within arm's reach. The big workplace question here is: How does an employer manage workers and their need to remain connected throughout the day? The answer is going to vary depending on the company. But the key, as always, is clear and concise communication. Employers need to be reasonable about letting employees access their smartphones or other devices. Issuing a flat-out ban is rarely effective and can make people feel like they're not trusted by management. But if you spell out reasonable guidelines for in-office cellphone use, you can call people out when they don't follow the rules. "There's nothing wrong with disciplining people for that, as long as the employer is consistently applying the same standard across the board," said Brian Jackson, a labor and employment attorney with the firm Fisher & Phillips.

There's a lot of blather out there about workplace distractions, everything from fantasy football to online shopping. But I believe managers have to put trust in their workers, with the knowledge that it won't be hard to tell when someone is violating that trust and not getting work done. "I'd look at, 'Are they getting their job done and are they getting it done well?'" Waterman said. "Is the phone a hindrance or is it a helpful tool? It's not easy to hide your phone use like people think. People are going to notice." And if being away from a phone causes anxiety, allowing a person access to that phone might actually lead to a more productive workday. An offshoot of this technology addiction is that many people are so attached to their personal devices that they want to use them for work as well. For example, a company might offer a worker a laptop but that person would much prefer to use her iPad. "An individual may not have much right to an expectation of privacy when they're dealing with the company's computer," Jackson said. "But if it's your own computer, you have a level of expectation of privacy. So the company's going to have to figure out a way to balance your privacy with their protectable interests." Here again, there needs to be some clear communication about how a "bring your own device" situation can work. Jackson suggests that employers set up a stand-alone policy (not one that's part of the regular employee handbook) so employees "understand that along with the right to bring your own neck strap phone or laptop, there are some rights you're going to have to give up." That could include allowing a third party to audit your device to make sure you're handling company information properly. It could be allowing the company to remotely wipe out the memory of the phone or computer if it gets lost or stolen, thus protecting any proprietary information.

With the Alpha Lantern’s defeated at the finale of ‘Green Lantern Corps’ #12, this issue opens on yet another scene of the “Third Army” spreading across the universe and taking even more beings under their thrall. After the Third Army scene, there’s a couple of pages showing someone (my guess is the Guardians) freeing Xar, the villain that Guy defeated in ‘Green led light lanterns Corps’ #0, from the subcells on Oa. It looks like Guy is about to be in for a rough time. But before Guy gets tossed into the storm of crazy that’s sure to come, he’s first going to get built up. He was already promoted to the GL Corps’ Honor Guard. Now the Guardians are promoting him again. This time Guy is made the Corps’ sole “Lantern Sentinel”. This means that the Guardians will be taking Guy’s advice on decisions in the future. Of course, given Guy’s past relations with the Guardians and their recent plots with the Third Army, it’s pretty darn clear that this promotion is a part of some larger plot by the little blue monsters.

After being promoted to Sentinel, Guy is trusted to build a small team of Lanterns to escort some alien dignitaries to Oa to take part in some peace negotiations with another group of aliens. In the middle of their escort operation, Guy gets word that Xar has escaped the subcells. Fearing that Xar may head to Earth to hurt his friends and family, Guy takes half of his escort group and rushes towards home despite warnings from the Guardians that they fear an attack on the dignitaries. Meanwhile, John Stewart is getting some surprising news of his own. John learns that Mogo, the living planet that he destroyed at the climax to ‘Blackest Night’, is still floating in pieces around the universe and that these pieces have suddenly begun moving of their own volition. Peter Tomasi might not have been my favorite writer on ‘Detective Comics’, but he’s definitely doing a bang up job here on this title. The rise of the Third Army is shaping up to be one of the most intense stories I’ve read in a Green Lantern title in a while. I haven’t put my finger on it yet but something about this event is making me care more for these characters in outdoor sports stores than I did during the the literal train of events that led up to the rebirth of the DCU with New 52.

When most people think of mobile TV, they simply think of a video playing on a mobile device. But these days things are not so simple. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed recently and described advertising on mobile devices and the mobile experience as “closer to catv amplifier TV than desktop.” What was telling is that, he may actually be right. Television has traditionally been a very singular experience. When you are watching your favorite program, you are typically locked into a certain channel, watching the content and then periodically watching, or scanning through, ads delivered in between that content. This is much different than surfing the web on a desktop, where the swirl of ads, articles, pop-ups, banners and links to anywhere and everywhere else is anything but singular or consistent. Also on the desktop, you are most likely to be on one site only briefly before zipping to an entirely new destination. Zuckerberg does make sense when he talks about viewing Facebook on a mobile device and how it parallels to television. When you load up the Facebook app you are pretty locked into that one channel. You scroll through the content (typically your news feed) and then periodically you’ll view, or scroll through, an ad. The key point here is that those ads are not actually appearing yet. As mobile offers much less room for ads than spacious desktop Web browsers, and mobile users are much more sensitive to mobile advertising, rolling ads into this branded “channel” will have to be handled fairly delicately. But make no mistake, they most likely are coming. As more and more people use mobile over their desktops, revenue has to step in line and advertisers have to gain eyes via the traditional news feeds of apps like Facebook and Twitter.

Television producers and mobile content producers may never equate Facebook with TV, and actually content producers may not even have time to sit down with Facebook because of tight deadlines and long work days. But it is worth thinking about how the notion of TV could be changing, and how future generations of content consumers will be viewing and engaging in what they want to see. The huge advantage of mobile is that it does have the ability to lock viewers into a channel and hopefully keep them captivated via a stream of content, all while interspersing targeted advertising that is hopefully entertaining and not something people will scan, or rather scroll, through. The linear angle of Facebook on mobile can indeed be compared to digital remote control switch TV , and I can think of many people who I know who love Facebook as their favorite channel on their mobile device. The balance will be the disruption of ads and how consumers respond to it.

The comparison was always inevitable. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale brings together key characters from psp go accessories franchises and pits them against each other in a battle arena. Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series does the same thing but with Nintendo characters. Superbot, the developers behind All-Stars, is well aware of these comparisons. According to the game's director, Omar Kendall, this is exactly where the similarities end. Kendall, who has worked on fighting games like the UFC series, says the similarities between the two games are superficial and the differences lie in the core gameplay mechanics. "The biggest difference is Super Smash Bros. is a game about knocking people off a level, and we don't really have that," Kendall tells Polygon. "At the heart of PlayStation All-Stars is the Super System. So we don't have a health bar or anything like that. You're fighting to accumulate energy, this All-Star power, and this energy fuels your Super attacks. "Each character has three different supers and they get progressively stronger and it allows them to be more effective with kills," he says. Kendall likens PlayStation All-Stars to an American football match. Where football players move the ball back and forth down the field to try and get it closer to their goal, in All-Stars players are fighting to get energy, and once they have accumulated enough energy they use it to perform Super attacks, which is similar to an attempt at scoring a goal. A Super attack might land a player a kill, but it might not. There is no guarantee in the same way that scoring a goal isn't guaranteed. As chaotic as the action on the screen may be, Kendall says that chaos is only one part of All-Stars. The game is designed to be a fun, social experience, but it was also designed from the ground up to be a fighting game, even if it doesn't play like traditional games of the genre like Street Fighter and Tekken.

"We realized really early on that we weren't going to recreate a Tekken or a Street Fighter – we wanted to make a party-style game with four players on the same screen, four players playing on the same couch together. That was one of the foundational pillars of the concept," Kendall says. "But while a lot of the decisions were made with the casual gamer in mind, I think the underlying foundational elements of PlayStation All-Stars are fairly traditional." SuperBot's development team consists of fighting game players and non-fighting game players. Some of the developers have little experience with the genre while others have competed at global tournaments like EVO – the unofficial Olympics for fighting games. As such, the team knew they wanted to make a game that would be accessible to those who weren't familiar with the genre, but they also included something for players who are well-versed in fighting games. In the former, the controls were designed with the casual gamer in mind; in the latter, the design of the game itself allows room for more hardcore players to get competitive. "So normally when you try to introduce someone to a fighting game, you sit down and say OK, here's how you do a fireball and here's how you do a Dragon Punch, but that's not really what playing a new electronics fighting game is about," Kendall says. "There's this strategy and this mind game, a kind of head-to-head meeting of a battle of wit that takes place once you've figured out how to do the different move commands.

Photo albums nowadays mean pictures posted on Facebook, Tumbler, and Instagram and/or on small screens such as smart phones or tablets. Those photos were mostly downloaded from a digital door camera or a smart phone. Well, more of the latter, most likely. But there was a time when people used a camera to take pictures and phones were for – just that, calling! Technology has made it possible to have important moments in our lives get captured and viewed almost instantaneously on print, virtually and online! I still use both digital and film cameras all the time. They each serve a different purpose. You see, film and digital capture are completely different media. They are used for similar purposes, but they themselves are completely unrelated to each other. Most people get better results with digicams but some still prefer the look of film even if it takes more work and skilled photographers can get better results if they can complete the many steps from shot to print all perfectly. Because there’s more room for errors in making prints from film, especially from negatives, beginners and hobbyists usually get better prints from digital because there are fewer variables to control. Being on the subject of cameras and photography, please allow me to share the musings of a dear friend, photo enthusiast, erstwhile airsoft aficionado and I dare not call him blogger, Brahma Foz.

Let’s face it. Majority of digital camera users, like me, have no goal to become another Ansel Adams or Robert Capa, two of the greatest and influential photographers of all time. Most of us simply want to take memorable pictures of special times in our lives that include family and friends… and of course, our beloved hobby — airsoft. Now, here’s a feature in some digital cameras that will give you something to smile about — the Smile Detection mode. The feature is said to “capture joyous moments that used to get away!” Simply switch the camera to Smile Shutter mode with digital remote control switch, which functions whenever Face Detection finds a face in a scene. Once the Smile Shutter is activated, the camera automatically takes a photo for you. More impressive, the camera can detect different degrees of smiles in folks you photograph. Simply set Smile Level sensitivity to “high” and it will detect a faint smile. The “medium” level detects a normal smile, whatever that is. Set it to “low” if you want to capture a “hearty laugh.” If there are several subjects in the frame, you can use the camera’s touch screen to specify the face you want to capture smiling. Everyone else can be making a sourpuss, but the one you selected will look just fine. Yeah right… But I’m digressing… Seriously now

Hey cosplay game fans, it’s Halloween time again! And once again we have scoured the Internet to bring you the best video game based Halloween ultraman costumes for 2012. In our list of best Halloween costumes for 2012 we specifically made sure that these costumes are all purchasable through retail means on common sites such as cosplay outlet tinydeal.com. Yes we get it, all the hard core cosplay and costume designers out there that plan and make your Halloween costumes months ahead of time have some pretty awesome custom outfits but wait till you see our list this year, it will make you think twice.. scared that someone else might show up at the same party with the same costume as you do? A couple sexy Princess Peach’s from Mario or a few Ezio’s from Assassins Creed at the same party ain’t that bad right? Some costumes start out simple and with almost everything included such as the Mortal Kombat series and the Street Fighter series but as you progress into the Assassins creed, Zelda, Halo and World of Warcraft Halloween costumes the details and accessories are going to be the things that really differentiate how you fare versus the others dressing up as the same character, the accessories are also the things that are going to set you back the most money especially when you want 100% authenticity and bonus points you will need swords, boots, weapons etc.. Keep in mind we have not seen most of these costumes up close so the deception may be in the images posted.

Remember make sure you order your costumes well ahead of time, I give at least a week in advanced to make sure your ready to go for those Halloween parties! Go figure that most Halloween video game costumes are made for men, there where so many that we had to actually be very selective when posting up the list. By far our favorite for both detail and possible uniqueness is the assassins creed costumes both are very realistic and detailed and with accessories you might actually feel like your really Ezio or Altair. Of course second place goes to the Halo Master Chief supreme edition costume but that thing will set you back $800! And then you have to either find or make your own gun that’s big enough to warrant a Halo outfit (nothing we could find on the retail market for this)... it would be weird walking around as Master chief with a nerf gun that’s for sure! By the way we don’t see any reason why Women couldn’t also wear these guys hinata hyuga cosplay costumes as a lot of them are uni-sex. This is probably one of the most detailed most accessorized costumes of 2012. First off you have all the clothing which is meticulously crafted to look like the video game version of assassins creed from the boots to the cape, hoodie even down to the belts and vambrace’s.

The lighting fixture industry is segmented into three major markets: construction, vehicles and machinery, and consumer and commercial goods. The construction market is the largest segment for lighting fixtures and gains in this market will be led by the residential building segment. Meanwhile, sales gains in the vehicles and machinery market will nearly match those of the construction market over the forecast period as vehicle production rates improve. Global Information, Inc. (GII) is pleased to announce the availability of three new market research reports highlight the global market for lighting fixtures and

led light lanterns. Global demand for lighting fixtures is projected to climb 6.9 percent annually through 2016 to $153 billion. Product sales will be driven primarily by a strong global rebound in motor vehicle output and an acceleration in building construction activity. Efforts to conserve energy and convert to more efficient light source technologies will also boost gains, particularly as sales of incandescent and other less efficient lamps are being phased out through much of the world. Increased use of these higher-end fixtures will also contribute to gains in value terms. In the developing world, ongoing efforts to modernize the building stock, coupled with increasing urbanization and rising incomes will further aid advances. The new Freedonia industry study presents historical demand data for 2001, 2006 and 2011, plus forecasts for 2016 and 2021 by product, market, world region and for 24 major countries. The study also considers market environment factors, evaluates company market share and profiles 39 industry competitors, including Acuity Brands, Cooper Industries, HELLA and Koito Group.

The worldwide market for LED lighting fixtures (excluding retrofit lamps) is close to 8 billion USD, equal to over 10% of the worldwide consumption (and probably some 3% in terms of physical units). Yearly growth has been close to 70% during 2011. The third edition of the CSIL multi-client report, "LEDs and the worldwide market for lighting fixtures" is mainly based on around 500 interviews with manufacturers and retailers of lighting fixtures worldwide during the first half of 2012, plus statistical data and overall CSIL market knowledge in the lighting fixtures sector. Consumption of LED based lighting fixtures is estimated for the years 2006-2011 and forecasted for the years 2012-2015. The world market for outdoor lighting fixtures in 2011 can be estimated in about US$ 16.1 billion (Euro 11.6 billion), equal to 22.4% of the total lighting fixtures market. In US$, yearly growth has been equal to 7.8%.Outdoor lighting is growing faster than the sector average and this trend will continue at least till 2015. Approximately 16% of worldwide consumption of outdoor lighting fixtures (2.55 out of 16.1 bn USD) is made by LED based products for the year 2011.The ten major countries, in order of outdoor lighting fixtures consumption, are China (by far also the main exporter), the United States, Japan, Germany, France (mostly with imported products), Canada, India (with a big growth), the United Kingdom and, approximately with the same market size, Spain, Brazil and South Korea. Together, ten countries have an aggregated consumption of 71% in value of the world (60 countries) total consumption. Main players in the global outdoor sports stores lighting fixture market include Philips Lighting, Acuity Brands, Schreder, GE Lighting, Iwasaki, Toshiba, Zumtobel. 50 players hold almost 50% of the worldwide outdoor lighting market.

With colourful costumes and creative characters, the Ryerson Anime Club (RU Anime) brings a unique form of art, self-expression and recreation to campus. Shannon Baldwin explores the world of ultraman costume Cosplay. Ash Ketchum, Loki and Cardcaptor Sakura sit casually in a small but crowded room and give advice to students. While this may seem like a peculiar scene to some, they all have one thing in common: they’re all Ryerson student cosplayers. Cosplay, or costume play, generally involves dressing up as anime, manga or comic book characters as a form of art and recreation. Last week, a Ryerson Anime Club (RU-Anime) workshop gave firsttime cosplayers advice on how to create, maintain and improve costumes for next May’s Anime North, a Toronto anime convention. But conventions aren’t just a place to parade around in costume, said arts and contemporary studies student Alexa Osborne.“I associate myself with that character so much that people can get a sense of who I am by who I dress up as.”As a girl who felt like an outcast in high school, Osborne said she dresses as characters that have been through similar situations as her. She said it’s why she’s dressed as Loki, Thor’s mischievous step-brother. While traditional comic book characters are always expected at anime conventions, characters from Disney, Sailor Moon, and The Avengers are presumed to the be the most popular this year. The popularity of My Little Pony costumes for men will be huge at Anime North, said Patricia Alba, vice president of finance at RU Anime and third-year early childhood education student.

I’d like to point out that there are a lot of guy My Little Ponies, ” said Alba. Crossplaying, a term for people who dress up as characters of the opposite sex, is also common at conventions. Alba told the guys and girls at the workshop that “if [they] want to crossplay then go for it!”“Your skin colour, gender, weight and age doesn’t matter; if you love a character portray it. [Cosplaying] is all about your love of what you want to portray.” Although cosplaying can be inclusive and accepting, not all parents are ready to accept that their children dress up.“My mom really doesn’t want me going to conventions but I really want to go,” said first year business technology student Simona Chang.“It’s a strange world for parents to perceive, so the best thing to do is bring them with you, they’ll have a lot of fun and begin to appreciate the art of costume making,” said Kelsey Brunton, president of RUAnime and a fourth-year performance production student. Osborne said it took her dad a while to really get into it, but now he gets excited about her costumes and brags about them, showing pictures to friends and coworkers. As long as you’re having fun, Osborne said it doesn’t matter how detailed or realistic your costume looks. She once took a large stick, attached a Christmas ornament to the top, and called it a staff. The first hinata hyuga cosplay costume she ever wore to a convention was of InuYasha, the eponymous of a Japanese manga series, when she was 15 years old. She admits that it wasn’t close to being a realistic interpretation.I looked like no other InuYasha there, but I thought, ‘You know what? Fuck you, I’m the best InuYasha here!’” The door swings open and conversation stops as a bright pink girl bursts in. Kate Perez, a first-year early childhood education student, is dressed as Annie from League of Legends in a full pink dress, a red wig and all the finishings.
