“It is such a joy to be able to take care of my granddaughter while my daughter is working and going to school,” Julie said.

Before her granddaughter came along, Julie spent much of her career working for a non-profit serving adults with disabilities. Before that, she was a third-grade teacher. It is no wonder that serving the community and ultimately, the world is at the heart of her vision for igogo.

“I hope to get to the point to where the majority of the products we carry and the vendors from whom we purchase serve a greater cause,” Julie said.

A boost for newcomers

Dolores Lamm Wienand of rural Freeport is always pursuing anything pertinent to the history of this locale, especially that of her own pioneer ancestry, the Bangassers and the Lamms … and, her church. Wienand has added Vestidos de verano to the wedding gown display four from weddings of her ancestral lines worn by a Victorian era bride as well as others ranging through the years to the flapper era and on to the 1960s of modern America.

The four featured gowns were worn at the weddings of four consecutive generations of Lamm family brides each of which took place at St. Joseph Church. The years of those weddings or vestidos de moda were 1880, 1908, the mid-1940s and 1966. The gowns in the display are labeled with that information. Wienand said the 1880 gown had been adapted somewhat for more practical wear as was the custom in those days.

Michael Bangasser, a French immigrant, had come to Stephenson County in 1843, and in 1844 purchased the farm on Baileyville Road that remains today in the family’s ownership. Michael acquired it through a land grant from the United States government when Tyler was President. He paid $1.25 per acre for the approximate 232-acre tract. Michael had married Mary Staebell, also a native of Germany, about the time he came to this locality. Their union produced eight children. Two of their daughters, Elizabeth and Ellen, married Lamms, William and John, respectively. Thus the Bangassers and Lamms were united.

A newspaper interview of Fred Bangasser Sr., Michael’s son, on the centennial anniversary of the farm, informs us that when the Illinois Central Railroad was built southward from Freeport in the early 1850s, his father sold the portion of the farm that was separated from the main part, leaving it with 200 acres. The property eventually became known as “Cottonwood Farm” because of the many trees of that species on it.

Fred Sr., by the way, held many offices in Cedar Creek Township and also served on the Stephenson County Board of Review.

Farming was the predominant livelihood of this prolific clan, and Catholicism their faith. Some of the men became merchants in Freeport. Wienand has collected some genealogy of her blood line and believes it ties in, typically, with the history of St. Joseph Church. Newspaper articles from the past use such words as “esteemed” and “highly respected” to describe members of this large family.

Family members from each subsequent generation have had the farm to this day. The article on Fred Bangasser states that the first creamery in Stephenson County was built on a spring at that farm by Michael Bangasser. It was called the Stephenson County Creamery. It was first operated by human power and later by “horse-tread” power. “Output on that farm was sold in Freeport and some was shipped to Chicago.” According to the article, during the Gold Rush of 1849, Michael Bangasser and a brother went to California but “soon returned.”

The Lamms Arrived
Georg Lamm and his wife, the former Gertrude Hausman, were the first of the Lamms to come to America from Germany. That was in about 1834 when Freeport was about to become a city. The marriage was blessed with several children. They acquired a farm south of Freeport, along with Georg’s brothers, and like the Bangassers, succeeding generations have stayed on these farms. Because of that we now have a 12-mile strip known as Lamm Road.

Many stories of the early settlement of Stephenson County are derived from the families of those marriages and other members of the Bangasser and Lamm lines. St. Joseph Church is blessed with many parishioners of other surnames who are actually branches of the Bangasser and Lamm families.

Dolores Wienand cherishes the mark her ancestors have made on her beloved St. Joseph Church. She said both Bangassers and Lamms hauled stone for building the lovely white church at 229 W. Washington Place. But, she says, the church was originally red brick.

She likes to note that it cost the couple married in those earliest days 15 cents to stable the horse and carriage in which they rode to their wedding. She’ll point out a lovely accessory in the museum’s display, a velvet prayer book with a bone cross on its front carried by Josephine Straub when she married Fred Bangasser Sr. in 1880. Seven of the pieces come within the category of visual artworks. Hussein Chalayan, who collaborated with Gavin Turk, felt that people expected "a dress with one of Gavin's images on it". Both keen to move beyond their comfort zones, they made The Four Minute Mile, a four-minute recording of Turk talking about art and Chalayan humming in accompaniment, set to a rhythmical soundtrack of running feet.

Putting designers and artists to work together poses the question of whether fashion is art. These pieces will be displayed first in the Victoria & Albert Museum; in August, they will move to Selfridges where they will be centrepieces of the Olympic window displays.

The first time Jonathan Saunders met up with artist Jess Flood-Paddock, they talked a lot about the differences between their worlds. "Fashion is a business," says Saunders. "I am in the service industry. My job is about meeting consumers' needs, which is totally different from fine art, which is about personal expression. We talked about consumerism, and Andy Warhol, and screen printing and the mass production of art." They found the similarities in what they do – "we are both process-driven" – and came up with an installation of 200 everbuying screen-printed plastic sheets hung on a rail. I spoke to Susanna Greeves, the curator of the exhibition, as she was overseeing the installation, and asked if she saw visual themes emerging. "If you look at it as an exhibition, there is a lot of radiance and luminosity and jewel-like colours," she say. "And you can also see an emphasis on craft, on the presence of a human hand in the making of these works. It makes me wonder if the artists are subliminally responding to the idea of the V&A as a setting."

The explicit theme is the Olympian spirit, in its broad sense. "The original Olympic values of strength, power, honesty – the inspiring stuff – were very much part of the brief," says Caroline Rush, CEO of the British Fashion moda coreana Council, "but we also wanted it to be completely open-ended." Paul Smith and Charming Baker's installation of a tiny mouse holding up a bicycle, and Mary Katrantzou and Mark Titchner's digital video installation with the words "Courage, Ambition, Passion, Strength" show Olympic spirit, but both add a wink in the title. The mouse-and-bicycle is dubbed Triumph in the Face of Absurdity ("It's about the British way of rooting for the underdog," says Baker) while the Katrantzou/Titchner piece borrows a line from Emily Dickinson: "Tint the Pallid Landscape (Off to the wars in Lace)".

“These energy bugs are a silent battery killer,”said Y. Charlie Hu, a Purdue University professor of electrical and computer engineering. “A fully charged phone battery can be drained in as little as five hours.”

Findings are detailed in a research paper being presented during the 10th International Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications and Services, or MobiSys 2012, June 25-29 in the United Kingdom. The paper was written by doctoral students Abhinav Pathak and Abhilash Jindal, Hu, and Samuel Midkiff, a Purdue professor of electrical and computer engineering.

The researchers have completed the first systematic study of the no-sleep bugs and have proposed a method for automatically detecting them.

“We’ve had anecdotal evidence concerning these no-sleep energy bugs, but there has not been any systematic study of them until now,” Midkiff said.

The researchers studied 187 Android applications that were found to contain Android’s explicit power control APIs, called “wakelocks.” Of the 187 apps, 42 were found to contain errors — or bugs — in their wakelock code. Findings showed the new tool accurately detected all 12 previously known instances of no-sleep energy bugs and found 30 new bugs in the apps.

The glitch has been found in interactive apps, such as phone applications and services for telephony on Android that must work even though the user isn’t touching the phone.The app may fail to engage the sleep mode after the interactive session is completed.smartphone baratos users, meanwhile, don’t know that their phones have the bugs.

“The tool analyzes the binary code and automatically and accurately detects the presence of the no-sleep bugs,” Midkiff said.

The Purdue researchers have coined the term “power-encumbered programming” to describe the smartphone energy bugs. Researchers concentrated on the Android smartphone, but the same types of bugs appear to affect other brands, Hu said.

The latest decisions don't doom Apple's courtroom efforts - the company can appeal Posner's ruling, while Koh's directive had nothing to do with the merits of the Samsung case about to go to trial, or the legal arguments for an injunction on the new Samsung smartphone. But delays in moving its cases through the courts is a blow to Apple's efforts to get quick and favorable rulings that it hopes would give it an edge in the marketplace for mobile devices.

Apple has waged the international patent war since 2010, part of its attempt to limit growth of Android, which last year established its dominance as the world's best-selling mobile operating platform. Apple's opponents, meanwhile, say the iPhone maker is trying to use patents to avoid competing solely in the market. A clear victory in one of the U.S. legal cases could strengthen Apple's hand in negotiating cross-licensing deals outside court, where companies agree to let each other use their patented technologies. "The stalemate is much more of a victory for the accused infringers than it is for Apple," said Brian Love, a professor at Stanford Law School who studies patent litigation. Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet reiterated a previous statement, saying the blatant copying of its devices was wrong. Google spokesman Jim Prosser said the rise of patent litigation is due to too many vague software patents, and that Google's success makes it an attractive target. A Samsung representative declined to comment.

The company's first lawsuit in its global patent fight was against smaller competitor HTC Corp in a Delaware federal court in March 2010. Apple had sought an injunction barring the sale of Motorola products, but Posner said that would be "contrary to the public interest." Nick Rodelli, a lawyer and adviser to institutional investors for CFRA Research in Maryland, rated Posner's decision an "incremental negative" for Apple. However, Rodelli doesn't think it will stand up on appeal, saying in part that Posner improperly denied Apple a hearing on its right to an injunction. Yet Stanford's Professor Love said that Posner's ruling, and the delay it causes in Apple getting the case to trial even if it wins an appeal, wll reduce Apple's leverage during any potential licensing talks.

In the Samsung lawsuit, filed last year in California, the iPhone maker says Samsung "slavishly" copied the iPhone and iPad. Samsung denies the claims and countersued.
